UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE C.ONTINUJNG EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA Commencement 1997 Saturday, June 7 1:30-3:30 p.m. Ted Mann Concert Hall Dear 1997 University College Graduates: Congratulations on your graduation from University College and the University of Minnesota! For over 80 years, University College has provided students at the University of Minnesota with the opportunity to pursue their educational goals through several specialized degree programs such as the Inter-College Program, the Program for Individualized Learning, and most recently the Bachelor of Information Networking and the Bachelor of Applied Business. For many of you receiving your degrees today, the pursuit of a degree has included combining work, study, and family responsibilities. Your perseverance and dedication is to be commended and applauded. In today's competitive workplace, a baccalaureate degree is an essential credential. Even this degree, however, represents as much a starting point as a point of completion. Continuous learning to update your skills and knowledge will be a necessity as you strive to keep up with the constant changes in your field and the world around you. University College, through its professional updating programs and career development courses, can help you maintain the professional edge you will need throughout your work life. I welcome you as University College alumni and look forward to maintaining connections with you in the future. Best wishes for continued success throughout your lives. Sincerely, Harold A. Program for Individualized Learning (PIL) is a self-designed baccalau reate degree program offered through University College. In 1972, the program -then known as the University Without Walls-admitted its first students. Graduates of PIL work in a broad range of professions, including health care, law, the arts, business, and education. These dedicated graduates have com pleted either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree in which they assumed responsibility for their education in collaboration with faculty and advisers at the University of Minnesota. Their degrees represent academic rigor and a combination of classroom and independent learning. For many PIL graduates, the degrees they receive today also incorporate prior experiential learning. As accomplished self-directed learners, PIL graduates have acquired specialized or interdisciplinary degrees embedded in the strong liberal arts tradition of the University of Minnesota. Animal Science/Life Sciences Inter-College Program A Tradition of Student-Centered Education Since established by the Board of Regents in 1930, the Inter-College Program (ICP) has offered undergraduate students the opportunity to work with faculty and college advisers to design individualized, cross-collegiate bachelor's degrees to meet their particular interests, goals, and backgrounds. Thousands of undergraduates have received ICP degrees by thoughtfully combining the rich resources of the University of Minnesota. Due to the thorough planning required for the ICP individualized degree, ICP graduates leave the University not only with their successful academic records and learning, but also prepared to clearly communicate their plans and accomplishments as they undertake careers, further education, and community involvement. Inter-College Program Advisers and Staff Susan Stonefield Philip Wagner Josh Borowicz Lupita Galvan Catherine Carter Stacey Sadowski Tim Ha Director Academic Adviser Academic Adviser Academic Adviser Administrative Coordinator Student Office Assistant Student Office Assistant Description of University College This year we celebrate the merger of two academic units of the University of Minnesota which have long and distinguished histories of serving the nontraditional learner. The "historic" University College, which includes the Inter-College Program and the Program for Individualized Learning, and Continuing Education and Extension, which.for over 80 years has served the adult and part-time student, were combined to form the new University College. The name University College is associated in England and the United States with academic distinction and broadened access. These qualities are appropriate to the program innovation Minnesotans have come to expect from one of this country's most comprehensive continuing education programs for nontraditional and part-time students. The new vision for University College - meeting the career development and continuing education needs of women and men in the 21st century-is based on the recognition that, increasingly, lifelong learning and convenient access to education, both on the campuses and from a distance, are essential in the lives of individuals and organizations. The new University College will continue to be the University's major point of access and educational opportunity for the nontraditional, part-time, summer, and distance learner; will operate on the basis of partnerships with colleges, campuses, and outreach units within the University; and will collaborate with community colleges and other institutions, as well as business and industry, to offer new programs and services. The markings, cut, and colors of modern-day academic costume-cap, gown, and sometimes hood-indicate the academic degree, the field of study, and the institution that granted the degree. The cap at the University of Minnesota is the same for all academic degrees. The long point of the shell should be worn to the back. Tassels are fastened to the top of the cap and hang on either side "as the wind blows." Bachelor's degrees gowns are used by candidates for the bachelor of arts, elected studies, fine arts, and science degrees. The bachelor's gown has long, pointed sleeves and is worn closed at the top. Women may wear white collars. Hoods are not worn, but caps are. The latin honors insignia should be worn around the neck. Honors ribbons need not be returned-once awarded they belong to the graduate. The University of Minnesota is an equal opportunity educator and employer. This publication is available in alternative formats; disability accommodations are available. Please ca/1624-8042.
