Introduction of Commencement Speaker Chancellor Lendley C. Black IX. Commencement Address Andrea Schokker, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Andrea J . Schokker, earned both bachelor of science and master of Science engineering degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, and holds a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Schokker spent nearly a decade at Penn State where, in one of her roles, she was the professor in charge of undergraduate programs. She was hired by UMD in 2008 as founding head ofUMD's Department of Civil Engineering. Professor Schokker, a licensed professional engineer specializing in structural engineering, has focused her research on con- crete bridge structures and sustainable structures. She has held a variety of leadership roles in national professional societies including serving on the Board of Directors for the American Concrete Institute, and has won numerous awards for teaching, research, advising, and professional achievement. Dr. Schokker began her role as Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in January 2012. 3 X. University of Minnesota System Awards Horace T. Morse-University of Minnesota Alumni Association Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education This honor is awarded to exceptional candidates who exemplify the University's commitment to excellence in undergraduate education. Steven P. Sternberg, associate professor of chemical engineering Swenson College of Science and Engineering Dr. Steven P. Sternberg has worked in the Chemical Engineering Department at UMD since 1999, moving from the University of North Dakota. He helped create the Environmental Science program (2005) and was the first director of the program. He maintains the environmental engineering minor in the Chemi- cal Engineering Department, and hopes to expand it someday. He currently teaches courses in Material and Energy Balances, Material Science and Engi- neering, Chemical Reaction Engineering, and Pollution Control Technologies. Dr. Sternberg is a registered Professional Engineer and has been awarded the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers Professionalism Award (2004), 5 the Saiki Foundation Award for Graduate Teaching Excellence, (1999) and the UMD-SCSE College Outstanding Advisor Award (2009). His current scholarly activities include writing a text book Air pollution: Engineering and Science, exploring the use of aquatic plants for heavy metal bioremoval from surface and waste waters, and creating a device for low-temperature off-grid power generation. University of Minnesota Duluth Awards Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching This award recognizes faculty who have made contributions to the teach- ing .mission of UMD that are of extraordinary quality and reflect UMD's emphasis on high quality undergraduate and graduate education. This award will honor faculty for innovative pedagogy, development of creative and critical thinking, student mentoring, commitment to liberal education, and leadership and impact within a department. Colleen Belk, instructor of biology Swenson College of Science and Engineering Colleen Belk obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison, where she majored in genetics and graduated with honors. She also has a master's degree from Minnesota State, Mankato. Colleen has written a leading non-majors biology textbook, now in its fourth edition, as well as several other texts. While at UMD she has been awarded the SCSE advising award, and was the Linda M. Larson Woman of the Year. Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award Faculty members who receive this award are honored for their excellence in research or creative activity, scholarly or artistic contributions to individual disciplines, and dedication to student research. Imran Hayee, professor of electrical and computer engineering Swenson College of Science and Engineering Dr. Imran Hayee is a professor and director of graduate studies in the electrical and computer engineering department. He completed his masters and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, respectively, in December 1994, and December 1998. After completing his Ph.D. , he worked in the Forward Looking Work Group of Tyco Submarine Systems, formerly known as Bell Laboratories, in New Jersey for two years researching on future generation trans-oceanic optical fiber communications systems. He later joined a start-up company (currently part ofLevel 3Com- munications) in Maryland working on development of the state-of-the-art 6 optical fiber telecommunication products. After spending about four years in that start-up company, he joined the electrical and computer engineer- ing department at UMD in fall 2004. Since then, he has continued his productive research working with many graduate students. His research interests are in the areas of optical fiber communications systems, digital signal processing, medical instrumentation and intelligent transportation systems. Dr. Hayee holds 13 US patents and has also published one book chapter and more than 50 research articles in distinguished journals and prestigious conferences. Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Public Service This award honors faculty who have demonstrated extraordinary and sustained commitment to public service and community engagement. This award recognizes faculty who have demonstrated an integration of civic and community engagement in their teaching; shown leadership in advancing students' civic learning; conducted community-based research; fostered community partnerships; promoted the scholarship of engagement among his/her colleagues; or made contributions to positive change on issues of public concern. Susan Perala-Dewey, instructor of writing studies, College of Liberal Arts Susan Perala-Dewey received her bachelor of arts in philosophy and master of Arts in English from UMD, where she now teaches in the Department of Writing Studies. She facilitates professional development for area teachers through UMD's College in the Schools program and for the Lake Superior Writing Project, a satellite of the Minnesota Writing Project. She currently serves on her department's Undergraduate Committee; CLA's Change Team; and CLA's Strategic Planning Committee. Her poetry has been published in The Talking Stick, Dust and Fire, and the Wisconsin Poetry Calendar. Susan is a proud member of the Holocaust Educators Network and currently studies and practices Non-Violent Communication. Albert Tezla Teacher/Scholar Award This award is given annually to a faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Fine Arts who has an exceptional and effective teach- ing style that emphasizes the worth of research in a learned discipline and the maturing impact scholarly activity has on the development of human attitudes and values. Linda Legarde Grover, associate professor of American Indian Studies College of Liberal Arts Dr. Linda LeGarde Grover, an associate professor in the Department of 7 American Indian Studies, is a member of the Bois Forte Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe and author of poetry and fiction as well as research articles about American Indian literature, history and pedagogy. Her poetry chapbook The.Indian.at.Indian.School was published by the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Sequoyah Research Center Native Writers Series, and her book The Dance Boots, published by the University of Georgia Press, has received both the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction and the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize. She received both her Bachelor of Arts in history and her Master of Education from UMD, and her Ed.D. from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. As a Continuing Education undergraduate student Dr. Grover was a student of Dr. Tezla's, who inspired her with the pleasure and joy in teaching that he so clearly demonstrated to his diverse and hopeful class of night school students. The modern academic costume has evolved from the dress of the medieval guilds and the early religious orders. Today, everyone with a college or university degree may wear the black academic gown. Hoods, which are omitted by seniors who are candidates for degrees, are worn by graduates. At the. University of Minnesota, the l ining of the hood has a maroon chevron on a gold background to represent the University colors. A University faculty member who holds a degree from another college or university wears the colors of his/her own school. Distinctions between sleeves indicate the type of degree held by the wearer. A long pointed sleeve indicates a ~achelor's degree, while a long, closed sleeve with a slit near the upper part of the arm designates a Master's degree. A round, open sleeve marks a Doctor's degree. A Doctor's robe has velvet trimmings on the gown, including crossbars on the sleeve. The trimmings may either be black or may match the color of the hood edging. · Candidates for degrees wearing medallions are honor students. The tassel color stands for the field of study of the graduate. School of Business and Economics is drab; College of Education and Human Service · Professions may be light blue, gray, sage, or gold; College of Liberal Arts may be white, gold, purple, copper, peacock, pink, citron or brown; School-of Fine Arts are brown or pink; and College of Science and Engineering are gold or orange. Academic caps, or mortar-boards, derive their name from the similarity to the top portion of the mortar-board used by a mason. At the University of Paris, teachers placed square, stiff caps on graduates to signify promotion. This type of headgear was adopted later by the masters at Oxford and worn on all occasions to demonstrate their independence. A clue as to why these Oxford faculty members chose the square mortar-board is given in this 1564 poem. " 'Tis square like scholars and their books: The rest are round, but this is square · To show that they more stable are. " THE MACE The mace, which is carried by the faculty member leading the academic procession, symbolizes leadership and authority. Use of a mace dates back to the 12th century when it was carried by kings' bodyguards. Even in more modem times, the mace has maintained some of its ancient function of keeping order. The doorkeeper of the House of Representatives has a mace for use in formal House activities. The mace carried in UMD's commencement procession has a glass sphere topped by the North Star a symbol of~he state of Minnesota. It.also has a seal of the University set in the handle. ' .
