McMurrin, former Commissioner of Education of the United States, will speak on "The Individual., His Freedom and His Education" at B p.m. Friday (March 6) in UMD's Kirby Student Center ballroom. Now professor of philosophy at the University of Utah, Dr. McMurrin served the U.S. government from 1961-62 and traveled extensively to inter- national education conferences from Washington to Japan to Geneva. He held many government appointments which included work with the National Commission for UNESCO, the Board of Foreign Scholarships and the National Culture Center Board. Another mission sent Dr. McMurrin to Iran as a specialist for the Department of State to serve as special advisor to the Chancellor of the University of Tehran. Dr. McMurrin presently serves as a member of the Research Advisory Council of the Committee for Economic Development and the Commission on Plans and Objectives for Higher Education of the American Council on Education. A published author of two books on philosophy, Dr. McMurrin attended the University of Utah, where he earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees, and the University of Southern California (Ph.D.). He also holds honorary degrees from Utah, Clark University, Delaware State College, Southern California and the University of Puget Sound. -1-
