As a freshman, she joined University Honors and through that 
program, volunteered at the Benedictine Health Center, Aftenro 
Home, and the Damiano Center.

mentor to freshman in the University Honors Program.
As the treasurer of Mortar Board, Anna organized and held a 
number of successful fundraisers, including selling 
owers at last 
year’s UMD commencement ceremony.

Mortar Board raised several thousand dollars each year.
In her freshman year, Anna joined the Pre-Law Club and, as a 
sophomore, became its treasurer. 
 e following year, she was the 
club’s vice president, and this year, she served as president. Much 
of her time in this club has been dedicated to helping members 
prepare to get into law school, including bringing in speakers and 
holding free practice LSATs.
Anna also organized a Pre-Law Club Networking Night this year, 
which was held in April at the Greysolon Ballroom.

brought together Pre-Law Club members and professionals from 
the 
eld of law to foster connections and mentoring opportunities.
Michaela Hesse
College of Education & Human Service Professions
On UMD’s Track and Field team, Michaela Hesse holds the 
school record for the Distance Medley Relay. Going the distance 
– fast – is the perfect metaphor for her undergraduate career; she 
completed her degree in three years.

 e Sebeka, Minnesota, native was mentored by her high 
school speech pathologist which led Michaela to UMD’s 
Communication Sciences and Disorders program. She did 
research on dysphagia (di
 culty swallowing) and hopes to 
present her 
ndings at an upcoming American Speech-Language-
Hearing Association conference. She also worked as an American 
Sign Language Teaching Assistant this year, mentoring new ASL 
students.
As a sophomore, she was a Welcome Week RockStar. “I loved 
helping new freshmen settle in during their 
rst week on 
campus.” 
 e following year, she served as a Welcome Week 
Team Leader, training and advising new RockStars.
As a scholar-athlete, Michaela has received numerous awards, 
including the 2018 NSIC Elite 18 Award for Academic and 
Athletic Excellence and the 2018 Myles Brand All-Academic with 
Distinction Award.

 is fall, she will attend graduate school at the University of 
North Carolina Chapel Hill. Michaela hopes to ultimately work 
in a hospital setting with people who have experienced strokes.

Academic Attire

 e Gown: 
 e 
owing gown comes from the 12th century, 
evolving from the dress of medieval guilds and the early religious 
orders. Today it is a symbol of democracy of scholarship. It is 
black for all degrees with standard sleeves for the bachelor’s degree 
recipient, long, closed sleeves for the master’s, and standard or 
round full sleeves for the doctoral degree. For the doctoral degree, 
the front face of the gown has velvet panels and has three chevron 
bars of velvet across the sleeves in black or in the color distinctive 
of the faculty’s discipline. 

 e Cap: 
 e black academic cap is a sign of freedom of 
scholarship and independence worn by all bachelor’s and master’s 
graduates. 
 e term “mortar-board” is derived from the similar, 
four-sided mortar-board used by masons. A clue as to why Oxford 
faculty members chose the square cap is found in the 1564 poem, 
“Tis square like scholars and their books: 
 e rest are round, but this 
is square to show that they more stable are.”  Doctoral graduates 
may wear a velvet tam.

 e Tassel: Colors represent the academic disciplines.

 e Hood: Hoods indicate master’s and doctoral degrees. 
 e 
front colored band indicates the academic discipline, while the 
lining of the hood has a maroon chevron on a gold background 
to represent the University of Minnesota colors. University faculty 
members who hold a degree from another college or university 
wear the colors of their school. 
 e doctoral hood is longer than 
the master’s, and has a wider velvet band.

Ceremonial Objects

 e Mace, which is carried by the faculty member leading the 
academic procession, symbolizes leadership and authority. Use 
of a mace dates back to the 12th century when it was carried by 
kings’ bodyguards.
Even in more modern times, the mace has maintained some 
of its ancient function of keeping order. 
 e doorkeeper of the 
Minnesota House of Representatives has a mace for use in formal 
House activities.

 e mace carried in UMD’s commencement procession has a 
glass sphere topped by the North Star; a symbol of the state of 
Minnesota. It also has a seal of the University set in the handle. 

 e Seal was adopted by the Board of Regents in 1939 as the 
corporate seal of the University of Minnesota. 
 e Latin motto, 
Omnibus artibus commune vinculum, means “a common bond for 
all the arts.” 
 e lamp represents the metaphysical sciences, the 
telescope represents the physical sciences, the plow represents the 
industrial arts, and the palette and brushes represent the 
ne arts.

Honor Medallions are worn by candidates for the bachelor’s 
degree who are in the top 15% of the graduating class within 
their school or college.

For the purpose of the commencement program, honors are based 
upon the UMD grade point average at the end of the previously
