UMD Commencement Special Notice Kayla Nelson Labovitz School of Business & Economics Eight-year old Kayla Nelson looked out at the members of the Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth. e stately Kitchigami Club setting added to the intimidation but, after a reassuring pat on the shoulder from her dad, Kayla launched into a successful pitch about why attendees should buy her Girl Scout cookies. And with that, a salesperson was born. It doesn’t always happen like this, but Kayla’s trajectory into business started young and hasn’t faltered. In fact, visiting the Labovitz School of Business and Economics building motivated her to switch from plans to attend college in the Twin Cities and become a third generation Bulldog, instead. Her extracurriculars complement her passion. Within the Labovitz School of Business and Economics, Kayla is president of the Sales Club, and a member of the Unit Change Team and Outreach Committee. She’s also been a Resident Advisor for three years, which adds to her leadership experience. “I’ve had some impactful mentors and now I want to pass that along– a ripple eect.” Her advice to those she mentors: get involved early and often to garner the full value of experiences, adding, “If you do something that you don’t like, it’s bringing you one step closer to what you do like.” After graduating with degrees in marketing, graphic design, and sales, Kayla is heading to Fort Myers, Florida to be an account manager with Gartner. Eliza Woods College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences From a village near Madison, Wisconsin, that’s no bigger than her college graduating class, Eliza Woods chose Duluth for the scenery and stayed because of the connections she made at UMD. ey formed while participating in an impressive list of extracurriculars, including dancing with the Attitudes Dance Association, as a Black Student Association member and former executive, as the UMD NAACP co-vice president, and as a UMD cheerleader. Eliza says she was inspired to study anthropology when she read “eir Eyes Were Watching God,” by Zora Neale Hurston, who was also an anthropologist and activist. Eliza believes that an anthropological perspective goes beyond the surface to give light to marginalized voices and helps us appreciate the multiplicity of the human experience. Included in this is her own family, whose legacy includes moving to the north from the south as part of the Great Migration. “I love to learn about my history and see it forward. Reclaiming this identity is a huge motivator for studying anthropology.” Despite rigorous academics and community involvement, Eliza nds time for hobbies like dancing, reading, knitting, and roller skating. She leaves Duluth with two priorities for her next venture: maintaining happiness and pursuing her passion. Hailing thee their Northern Star. 26 Anthems 27 Academic Attire e Gown: e owing gown comes from the 12th century, evolving from the dress of medieval guilds and the early religious orders. Today it is a symbol of the democracy of scholarship. It is black for all degrees with standard sleeves for the bachelor’s degree recipient, long, closed sleeves for the master’s, and standard or round full sleeves for the doctoral degree. For the doctoral degree, the front face of the gown has velvet panels and has three chevron bars of velvet across the sleeves in black or in the color distinctive of the faculty’s discipline. e Cap: e black academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship and independence worn by all bachelor’s and master’s graduates. e term “mortarboard” is derived from the similar four-sided mortarboard used by masons. A clue as to why Oxford faculty members chose the square cap is found in the 1564 poem, “Tis square like scholars and their books: e rest are round, but this is square to show that they more stable are.” Doctoral graduates may wear a velvet tam. e Tassel: Colors represent the academic disciplines. University faculty members who hold a degree from another college or university wear the colors of their own school. e doctoral hood is longer than the master’s, and has a wider velvet band. Ceremonial Objects e Mace, which is carried by the faculty member leading the academic procession, symbolizes leadership and authority. Use of a mace dates back to the 12th century when it was carried by royal bodyguards. Even in more modern times, the mace has maintained some of its ancient function of keeping order. e doorkeeper of the Minnesota House of Representatives has a mace for use in formal House activities. e mace carried in UMD’s commencement procession has a glass sphere topped by the North Star; a symbol of the state of Minnesota. It also has a seal of the University set in the handle. e Seal was adopted by the Board of Regents in 1939 as the corporate seal of the University of Minnesota. e Latin motto, Omnibus artibus commune vinculum, means “a common bond for all the arts.” e lamp represents the metaphysical sciences, the telescope represents the physical sciences, the plow represents the industrial arts, and the palette and brushes represent the ne arts. e University of Minnesota ag depicts the seal of the Regents of the University of Minnesota. UMD Symphonic Wind Ensemble e Symphonic Wind Ensemble is a select unit of approximately 50 music and non-music majors and is one of the premier ensembles in the UMD Department of Music. e ensemble regularly performs new compositions for the wind band medium and programs the most outstanding literature currently available. e group tours frequently and has appeared at the Minnesota Music Educators Association Conference and the College Band Directors National Association National Conference. Besides taking regional tours, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble has also toured internationally in Brazil. Fond du Lac Reservation Around the Earth Singers We collectively acknowledge that the University of Minnesota Duluth is located on the traditional, ancestral, and contemporary lands of Indigenous people. e University resides on land that was cared for and called home by the Ojibwe people, before them the Dakota and Northern Cheyenne people, and other Native peoples from time immemorial. Ceded by the Ojibwe in an 1854 treaty, this land holds great historical, spiritual, and personal signicance for its original stewards, the Native nations and peoples of this region. We recognize and continually support and advocate for the sovereignty of the Native nations in this territory and beyond. By oering this land acknowledgment, we arm tribal sovereignty and will work to hold the University of Minnesota Duluth accountable to American Indian peoples and nations.
