The class of 1946 extends its congratulations to the class of 1996, and welcomes these new physicians into the medical alumni family of the University of Minnesota with its proud traditions and record of high achievement. Acknowledgements A special thank you to the 1996 Graduation Committee, for all their hard work on graduation and planning all the festivities for the final year. Minneapolis, MN 55455 Office at 3-120 Owre Hall 612-626-4949 Fax: 612-626-4911 First, let me congratulate each and every student of the University of Minnesota Medical School Class of 1996 and those who have supported and encouraged you throughout your student career. For some of you, those four years may have gone relatively smoothly. For others, they may have been full of challenges and hard work. However it may have been, today is the day we say to you: You are medical doctors, health care professionals, caregivers and healers. The Medical School continues its tradition, as in the past cen- tury, of educating and encouraging physicians as compassionate care givers . This tradition will continue. Today, you will all make a pledge, the "Oath for New Physicians." The age-old oath, known as the "Hippo- cratic Oath," began almost 2,400 years ago. In contemporary terms, it is an oath to care, to help, and above all , to do no harm. As the practice of medicine becomes more complex, it is not too difficult to lose focus of what our profession truly represents. One can easily be disillusioned and think that this is just a business or a profit-making entity rather than a care-giving profession. Certainly, as all of our resources gradually become scarce, we as physicians should be good citizens in terms of fiscal responsibilities. We must insist that the best caring and healing do not necessarily require high technology and its inherent high cost. More often, the best caring and healing take the fonn of good communication, mutual understanding and com- passion. There is no price tag on trust and compassion. We should believe that the "Oath of New Physi- cians" means exactly that. The ceremony of donning the hoods is an academic tradition. The hood has the colors that forever repre- sent your school. In our case it is maroon and gold, the colors of the University of Minnesota. Bordering the hood is green velvet that is universally recognized as the color of the medical profession. You have earned the hood with its specific color combination. You can wear the gown and this specific hood on any academic occasion throughout your life. This color combination gives you recognition worldwide as a doctor of medicine from the University of Minnesota. We are also to honor our fonncr graduates of the Medical School. Traditionally, we honor at each gradu- ation ceremony our alumni who experienced the same recognition half a century ago. This tradition has a vitalizing effect on our alumni and our new generation of physicians- we have a tradition, we have a purpose, we are physicians and healers together. The present faculty and administration serve as a link between the more experienced and the new. We are proud to have that privilege. Finally, a personal note. My tenure as your Dean for the past year will soon be over. The past year witnessed a great deal of turmoil and significant changes in the Medical School. It has not been an easy period but I am glad that I have been able to play a leadership role in those troubled times. I leave with mixed feelings; I wish I could have done more. With my new role in the Academic Health Center and the Medical School, I am very optimistic about our future. I know, though, there is sti ll a lot to be done. Thank you and my best wishes.
