Friday, May 7, 2021 Commencement 2021 1To the graduating class of 2021: Whatever challenges you expected in medical school, weathering your last year in the midst of a pandemic probably wasn’t one of them. So congratulations on your exceptional fortitude over the past year, and congratulations on being able to celebrate this meaningful day in person with your classmates in the historic space of the Northrop Auditorium. I hope this makes an already memorable event unforgettable for you. For all the things the pandemic may have taken from you, it has also given you an experience and perspective that will help you for the rest of your professional life—knowing that you endured, adapted, and stayed the course. COVID-19 has been a serious and important lesson, and it changes how we practice medicine going forward. You are our vanguards—trained and experienced in a unique way that makes you ready to figure out what healthcare will look like in our future. You have seen, in real time, how clinical care, research, and education are not truly separate. They are extensions of one another, each one pushing forward and bringing the others with it. Our year of separation emphasizes everything it took away—face-to-face interaction, connectivity. It is my hope that sharing the unique and transformative experiences of 2020 will unite you and your colleagues in a special and meaningful way as you lead the future of medicine, as you are the future of medicine. You are also inheriting challenges, but if you weren’t looking for challenges, you wouldn’t have gone into medicine, would you? It takes extraordinary people to choose medicine as a career. People with focused drive and incredible patience. People who can learn from the past and yet are not bound to repeat it. People who believe they can change the world for the better and who have the intellect and heart to do it. People like you. Enjoy this moment to celebrate the results of the effort, heart, and perseverance you have put into achieving your degree. I think you are all aware of the magnitude of that accomplishment. A pediatrician, scientist, activist and author, Dr. Hanna-Attisha has testified three times before the United States Congress and was awarded the Freedom of Expression Courage Award by PEN America. She was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World and recognized as one of USA Today’s Women of the Century for her role in uncovering the Flint water crisis and leading recovery efforts, and most recently, received the 2020 Fries Prize for Improving Health. A frequent contributor to national media outlets, including the New York Times and Washington Post, Dr. Hanna-Attisha has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, BBC and countless other outlets championing the cause of children in Flint and beyond. She is the founding donor of the Flint Child Health and Development Fund (flintkids.org). A Covid-19 survivor, Dr. Hanna-Attisha has donated her convalescent plasma several times while continuing to advocate for health and racial equity. With concentrations in environmental health and health policy, Dr. Hanna-Attisha received her bachelor’s degree and Master of Public Health degree from the University of Michigan. She completed her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and her residency at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, where she was chief resident. She is currently a Charles Stewart Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health and an associate professor of pediatrics and human development at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Dr. Hanna-Attisha is the author of the widely acclaimed and bestselling book What the Eyes Don’t See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance, and Hope in an American City.
