This medical school has a very long tradition of educating and training physicians of excellence. Your faculty have attested that you have mastered the cur- riculum, and today the University of Minnesota will bestow your Doctor of Medicine degree and the doctoral hood that symbolizes it. This is the beginning of your life as a professional and a healer and the initiation of your walk- ing the path oflife-long learning. Your next step is residency, where you will learn more new knowledge and gain more experience practicing in your chosen area of interest. This phase is very special in that you really learn what being a physician is about, under the watchful eye of your mentors. It is an exciting experience to take all this new knowledge and learn how to apply it to maintain and restore health to the extent possible. After this, you will enter into practice and will learn for the rest of your life. It is very fulfilling for the people you work with and for you. You are entering the profession in a challenging era of change, as the whole approach to health changes. There will be more emphasis on prevention and wellness, interprofessional approaches to the health of populations and to the health of individuals, new methods of payment, and new models of care delivery. Part of the challenge will be for each of you to keep what is best for the patient in the center of your thinking and actions and to provide the leadership for that focus as the care delivery systems move into a new era. Part of being a professional is not only mastering a body of unique knowledge, but adherence to core values. These are expressed in the oath you will take today. I wish to emphasize too: care for the people who seek you out for help, and give compassion to each as you try to pro- vide that help. They seek you to be healed; you must respond to that need.
