Welcome to Public health moment from the University of Minnesota. The transition from high school to college is associated with dramatic declines in physical activity. During this time, students tend to eat more foods high in fat, and drink more sweetened beverages. This helps explain the increase in overweight and obesity among our college students. According to Tobin Nelson, a University of Minnesota epidemiologist who has conducted two large research projects on this topic, the transition from high school to college is an important, and I think under under appreciated life, transition that puts one at risk for becoming overweight or obese and the college environment provides an important opportunity for intervening to prevent weight gain. Nelson says that colleges and universities need to consider adding more physical activity. Programs for their students. Provide opportunities to engage in physical activity during this high risk life transition that includes not only participation in athletics, but also participation in physical activity. Given the obesity epidemic, those are important opportunities that we can capitalize on to help prevent this growing health problem with another public health moment. I'm John Finnegan.
