ONCE UPON A YEAR 1979 Trojan Yearbook University Of Minnesota Technical College Crookston, Minnesota Vol. 13 The school year, 1978-79, began with a shovel full of dirt. Ground breaking ceremonies were held in August for the new addition to Kiehle Library. The ground breaking for Kiehle was an actual on- the-scene experience, not so for the second ground breaking ceremony which, due to inclement weather in October, was moved indoors. Very symbolically, the ground breaking for the new food service building was held in Bede Hall and spoons rather than shovels were used to turn the new soil and begin the building which will be completed in 1980. 2 A The 1978-79 Trojan staff sincerely acknowledges all of the assistance given them by John Zak and the University Relations office. 3 As all good things must come to an end, so must the services of Regent L.J. Lee. Regent Lee was elected to the Board of Regents by the Minnesota State Legislature in the fall of 1972 and his period of loyal service as a regent ended in February, 1979. UMC. has been most fortunate to have such a friend as Regent Lee. Through his tireless efforts and dedication to education, UMC has been richly rewarded. During his six years on the board, he has helped the coordinate campuses receive fair treatment. He has maintained a close vigilance of the needs of the Crookston Campus and has promoted our building needs so that now Crookston is truly a growing campus. We, the staff of the 1979 Trojan, wish to dedicate our book to this outstanding public-spirited citizen. It is a privilege and an honor to salute Regent L.J. Lee. 4 ATHLETICS Intramurals: Sports For All I . 6 Basketbalk! Volleyball! Ping Pong! Arm Wrestling! Foosball! What do all of these have in com- mon? They are all a part of the intramural program at UMC. Not everyone can play a varsity sport, so intramurals offer them that need to compete in the athle- tic (?) arena. Marv Bachmeier, Athletic Director, is in charge of coordinating this very active ac- tivity. 7 a State In 78!!!!! The 1978-79 Football team: Row 1: B. Holland, M. Radi, B. Uscensky, A. Cota, F. Dostal, D. Bachmeier, K. Oravetz, K. Kittleson, T. Kaste, G. Rigstad, D. Oyen, J. Kern, K. Burgan, W. Perkins, J. Garcia and T. Rozier. Row 2: B. Gimler, R. Petzinger, B. Quackenbush, P. Rodke, R. Olson. Row 3: Coach Sims, Coach Sutherland, S. Fern, B. Fowler, S. Boras, K. Sethre, P. Larson, K. Bjornson, G. Kasanezky, P. Ash, D. Seilstad, A. Strandberg, J. Mylkelseth, J. Hanson, T. Trosvik, R. Seifert, R. Habeck, D. Johnson, T. Rose, B. Schleicher, and Coach Droen. Row 4: M. Dretch, J. Horner, M. Overland, R. Jorgenson, D. Sublet. I. Durken. B. Hanstad, K. Beekman, J. Pavlish, M. Drew, J. Erickson, D. Clark, D. Powers and B. Cobb. As the team prepared for a new season, they had only one thing on their minds WIN! And, win they did. (They were 7-0 for the season in conference play) As the picture shows, they were number 1. Number 1 in all respects: number 1 with the students; number 1 with the fans; and number 1 in the league. Coach Jim Sims was assisted this year by Jim Sutherland, Wayne Olson, Al Droen, Dana Powers, and A.D. Marv Bach- meier. 10 'he football cheerleaders for 1978-79 were: Mary Sheridan, Cheryl Feltman, Rebecca Snyder, Nancy Dorn, and Barb Scholberg. The mascot was Gary ohnson. The 1978-79 football season was an exciting one for everyone at UMC. The team defeated all the confer- ence opponents and lost only to the University of Minnesota-Duluth J.Vs before facing a very tough Rochester team in the state championship. It was a cold year, but our football team warmed our hearts! 11 12 The 1978-79 Girl's Volleyball team: Front row: Julie Ficken, Beth Braun, Linda Weiss, and Laurie Beattie; Middle row: Sue Hagl, Sherry Lange, Cindy Theisen, Deb Satre, and Ann Vossen; Back row: Coach Sonia Spaeth, Jane Erstad, Mavis Wharling, Dawn Liekhus, Tammy Graff, and Kathy, Koebensky. Hard Work Equals Girls Volleyball Coach Sonia had her girls working hard all season. It is diffi- cult to realize the determination and devotion of the team mem- bers and coach when examining the scores. The scores are not indicative of the sportsmanship and loyalty each girl demonstrat- ed this season. 13 Go Get ’Em Trojans! 1979 Trojan Basketball Team: Front row: G. Rigstad, M. Fincher, D. Bachmeier, A. Strindberg, B. Erdman, R. Deere, D. Johnson, T. Laxdahl; Back row: Coach W. Olson, D. Pecarina, T. Johnson, J. Onken, J. Clack, T. Rolf, B. Rongen, L. Lofstedt, G. Sandvig, and Coach J. Sutherland A well disciplined team coached by Jim Sutherland and Wayne Olson depended on team work this year. Although the record 6 wins and 15 losses is not a winning record, the team played well and scored well. The were led by classy shooting by their guards. Tim Rolf a 6’6” Freshman Center from McIntosh was named to the all district team. We are looking for a much better season next year. Win or lose, we loved our Trojans this year. 14 Cheering the Trojans to victory were Barb Scholberg, Jill Johnson, and Cindy Bigger. Since only five men can play at one time, Coach Sutherland and his able assistants watched carefully to be certain the best combinations were in the game. The team served as cheerleaders for the players on and off the floor. Women’s Basketball They Fought Hard To The Finish The Girl’s Basketball Team enter- tained many this year as they played enthusiastically and whole-hearted- ly. Once a girl has experienced the opportunity of competition, she un- derstands that winning is important, but it is not most important. Sonja Spaeth has coached and advised her team well. They demonstrated a spir- it of competition and sportsmanship that any UMC Trojan fan can be proud of. They are excellent ambas- sadors for UMC. 16 She’s Got The Ball. Two More For The Trojans! 17 Hockey Hooray!! Coach Mick Metzer began his association with UMC on a winning note. In his first season as head coach, the team was second in the state, and they had a record 11-9 for the season. It was a season of bumps, bruises, penalties, and victo- ries. All in all, it was a very good year. The 1978-79 Trojan Hockey team: Front row: P. Vandermeer, J. Goos, D. Byfuglien, M. Kaiser, D. Grindahl, B. Fowler, M. Ogaard, A. Brekken, J. Hilde, and M. Lund Manager. Back row: Coach Chuck Habstritt, R. Johnson, J . Carlson, B. Sauer, T. Noah, B. Foss, S. Johnson, T. Wilcox, K. Malloy, M. Miller, M. Magnusson, T. Schmitz, and Coach Mick Metzer. The 1978-79 hockey cheerleaders were: Linda Garcia, Rebecca Snyder, and Priscilla Brunfelt. 19 The 1978-79 Trojan Wrestling team: Front row: J . Trosen, M. Swecker, M. Emory, S. Stengrin, G . Sharp, B. Mosher, and K. Schoephoerster. Back row: L. Olson, R. Maus, R. Dvergsten, B. Austinson, P. Ash, T. Coauette, K. Oravetz, M. Dretsch, and Coach Rod Mosher. 20 Matmen Have Winning Year The 1978-79 Trojan wrestlers had a very productive year. Their record was 7 wins and 5 losses, and they were the Northern Division champions with a 4- 0 record. Head coach Rod Mosher had them working all the way. The boys scored lopsided wins against several op- ponents and barely lost to Waseca, 24- 27. In the tournament at Itasca they were third. The team emerged with two outstanding individual performers: Kurt Schoephoerster, sophomore, and Tim Coauette, freshman. Both boys participate in the National Junior Col- lege Athletic Association meet at Worthington, MN. 21 22 Batter Up! Ball 1 Strike 1 It's A Hit!! The 1979 Trojan Baseball Team: front row: Jack Kern, Dan Bachmeier, Dan Pecarina, Frank Dostal, Jerry Minnick, and Gene Rigstad; back row: Randy Terpstra, AI Cota, Scott Fern, Lance Olson, Phil Larson, Steve Grossman, Loel Olson, Tim Sampson and Doug Johnson. In spite of the weather, the UMC Trojan baseball team, coached by Wayne Olson, had a winning year. The record for the '79 team was 7-5. Almost no practices were held prior to the first games with Brainerd. However, the Trojans came on strong and either won or split each series after the disasterous beginning. This season was Trojans-0, Weather 1 . The team had little or no practice on the field before their first series. The weatherman did not cooperate, but this didn’t bother the Trojan warriors. Just as the Trojans of the past our 1978-79 team made their mark. 23 HAPPENINGS 26 28 The Walk Into Fashion The fashion majors give us a step into the changing times of fashion. This year the club presented several fashion shows with the themes of “Window Shop- ping” and “Fashion Flashbacks”. The students held fund raising activities for the fashion trips they take. Mrs. Ella Strand is the advisor for the club. To The Next Line Please What else but registration! Three times a year we see the never-ending lines of students waiting and hoping to get all the classes they need (want). People such as Tony Kuznik and his staff, along with student volunteers and faculty help to keep the day running (smoothly?). 29 Entertainment Year Around Throughout the year, there are various speak- ers and entertainers that visit our campus. Some that we remember are: The Mad Hugger, Bob Olson, Bandana, and various others who graced our campus. Career Center Helps Students One of the newest offices at UMC is the Career Placement Center directed by Bob Bastier. Students can come and receive help in selecting a future career. This office is open to students and staff at UMC as well as high school students in the surrounding communities. Ag Arama, A Cure For The Winter Blahs Ag-Arama was designed as a time for ag students to show what they had learned throughout the year. Even so, not only ag students get involved, everyone can participate. Events range from showmanship con- tests to tug-0-war to tobacco spitting to an egg toss. Christ Berger was the champion showman. He won this ward by proving he was the best showman in all of the five catagories: beef, sheep, swine, dairy and horse. Individual winners were: beef-Christ Berger, horse-Sue Maronick, swine-Jim Neprud, dairy-Gene Peterson and sheep-Mike Harden. The True Grit award went to Vicki Janish. Numerous students from Nigeria helped create an exciting flavor for cultural exchange. Advising the club was Richard Christenson. The president of the 1978-79 club was Zahid Jamal (top left). 51 52 Laugh, clown, laugh! How many have gone to the circle to watch the clowns entertain? Children from eight to eighty have been entertained by clowns like Emmet Kelly and Ronald MacDonald. We at UMC have our own clown, Brent Knoll. Brent entertains for the love of people. In playing the clown, Brent can make people laugh and forget, for the time, their troubles. We all love clowns. Send in the clowns! Keep on entertaining, Brent. Campus Mini st r y Serves Campus Ministries were active this year. They entertained the senior citizens, had retreats, went canoeing, and brought a group of covenant players to campus. This year’s Campus Ministries representative was Brent Jacobson. 53 Trojan Staff Is Proud To Present Once Upon A Year The Trojan Staff from left to right: Linda Weiss, Mitzi Flicek, Tammy Dossman, Editor, Janet Demers, and Beth Gerhardson. Her dedication with the help of a great yearbook staff gave us the privilege of distributing this book to you. Memories of your college days is what we’re all about. Our goal in 1978 and 1979 was to help refresh and relive those times to remember. We the staff, would like to thank the student body and the faculty for your patience and cooperation in the past year. 54 Students are becoming more and more interested in politics every year. As seen below, a large number of students visited Governor Al Quie at the Minnesota state capital. Democrat Rose Galinsky is encouraging new students to join the Young Democrats while the Young Republicans posed for the photographer. Both organizations were actively involved this election year by manning their respective election headquarters in November. Below is Kevin Seeger. If you take a minute to look about the campus, you’ll see Kevin everywhere! If he isn’t hauling musical equipment, thes he is refer- ing or umpiring a softball game. 109 Gayle Radniecki lets Lonnie Olson help himself to refreshments. Surprise Jan, you’re the new homecoming queen for 1978-79! Bob Anderson is busy hammering away. 110 As usual, we see Grand Nordick all smiles and looking for new jokes. Butch goes to work coaching the football team. Glenise Johnson is busy instructing a cooking class. The faculty needs some excitement too, and we see that they’re getting plenty of it! Lynne Mullins, left is shocked to see that she’s finally got proof to show the world she shows up for classes; Dorreen Kleven, below is obviously enjoying a delicious “creation” from Bede Hall. 112 There is nothing like a pair of earphones and a nice cold can of Coke to get you in the mood for home- work! We soon find out that there is one other fun part of college life besides homework! Her is Mark, Hutch, and Bruce, enjoying themselves during their break from the books. Other students like to do their home- work in the greenhouse. 114 Gene Rigstad has foot- ball, football, and more football on his mind right now! He’s probably deciding when to slip off his shoe to kick the ball! Ken Radke is coming into class late again! The HFS program at UMC is fortunate to have facilities like this playground for the children-it seems to bright- en up the campus. 115 Here sits Loel Olson, above, who was the '78-'79 Student Senate President. A great save by the Trojan goalie! Sorry, not even the hat will make you as tall! Denise Haugen is singing sweet songs to that special someone.
