Kierlin, '64 MBA Robert A. Kierlin is the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fastenal Company - a publicly held distributor of nuts and bolts. In 1967, Kierlin co-founded Fastenal which has since grown from one-1 ,000 square foot location into its current large-scale operation with over 900 locations in 48 states, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico. Fastenal is now the largest company of its kind in the coun try, and has experienced an annual growth rate of more that 20 percent for each of the last 18 years. Annual revenues exceeded $609 million in 1999. Known for his business frugality and acumen, Kierlin was once named "Cheapest CEO" by Inc. magazine. His famed thriftiness is certainly one reason for his firm's success, but Kierlin also has done it through sound business decisions and by investing in people and giving them guidance to succeed. A dedicated philanthropist, in 1995 Mr. Kierlin was recognized by the Minnesota Chapter of the National Society of Fundraising Executives and awarded the Individual Philanthropist Award. In fact, all five of the original shareholders of Fastenal share core philanthropic values, and an apprecia tion of the education they received in their early years. Lead by Kierlin, together the five have con tributed over $50 million through their Hiawatha Education Foundation, founded in 1987, to help give young people the same opportunity and access to quality education. 3 Kierlin lives in Winona where he is involved in a number of community organizations and serves on several business and educational boards. He is a board member of Cotter Schools Inc., an Advisory Committee Member of Cotter High School, and a board member of the Hiawatha Education Foundation. He is also a member of the Board of Overseers for the Carlson School of Management, and a member of the Dean's Advisory Board for the Institute of Technology, both at the University of Minnesota. Kierlin has served as a Minnesota State Senator since 1999, representing District 32. In addition, he has authored two books, The United Theory of Life and the Power of Fastenal People. Bob and his late wife, Stefannie, have two adult daughters, Lara and Monique. He married Mary Burrichter, Director of Finance for the City of Winona last year. Kierlin graduated from Cotter High School in Winona, Minnesota in 1957. He attended the University of Minnesota, Institute of Technology, earning a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree in 1962 and a Master of Business Administration degree in 1964 from the Carlson School of Management. 4 GRADUATES BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN BUSINESS John Abbott Samantha Bias Dorian Adams Benjamin Birk Bryan Altman Tricia Bjornson Lisa Aho Jackie Blackbird Anthony Albanese Janelle Bonnstetter With Distinction Heidi Boushey Michael Albert Benjamin Bowman Michael Alcott Michael Bowman Blaine Andersen Courtney Boysen Karl Anderson Stephanie Breit 0Lindsay Anderson Marie Brenden Michael Andrew Ryan Brevig Ryan Androff Robyn Brieske Elisabeth Arnold Pamela Brodehl Michael Arnold Stephanie Brunet With Distinction Megan Burkhammer F arid Atiyeh With Distinction Jeff Baars Miquette Burmeister David Bakke Derek Burns Carrie Baldwin Ann Cahoy Janel Barber Scott Campbell Bradly Barrows Fernando Carbajal Adam Bauer Angela Carlson Kevin Becker With Distinction Randall Belair Gregory Carlson Dominic Benetti Wendy Cell Mark Bentley With Distinction Jeffrey Benveniste Percy Chaby Jacquelynn Beres Dana Chaudoir Timothy Bergland Xu Chen Bruce Betcher With Distinction 0 = membership in Beta Gamma Sigma I; Election to lifetime membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest honor a business student anywhere in the world can receive from an undergraduate or master's program at a school accredited by AACSB. Students, based on high academic achievement, and tenured business school faculty members are the only ones eligible for member ship in the Society. With more than 440,000 members worldwide, the Society's membership comprises the brightest and best of the world's business leaders. Membership is offered to the upper 7% of the juniors and the upper 10% of the seniors enrolled in the school, and the top 20% from master's programs, and all Ph.D. students who have com pleted their programs in the last year. Students invited for membership in Beta Gamma Sigma are indicated by a 0 before their name on the list of graduates. Beta Gamma Sigma membership provides recognition for a lifetime. With alumni chapters in major metropolitan areas across the United States and the Betalink on-line membership community, those recognized for their academic achievements at the University of Minnesota can continue an active relationship with Beta Gamma Sigma long after graduation. This lifelong commit ment to its members' academic and professional success is defined in the Society's mission: to encourage and honor academic achievement in the study of business and personal and professional excellence in the practice of business. ?.4 UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS AND HONORS DISTINCTION AND HIGH DISTINCTION HONORS Distinction and high distinction honors are awarded on the basis of scholarship.
