With your graduation, you join the community of over 11,000 alumni of the Law School worldwide which can provide you with life-long mentoring, friendship and support as you embark on your legal career. Wherever your career may lead you, the Law School community will be an asset to you. The Career and Professional Development Center will continue to be available to you, and relationships with your classmates and other alumni of the Law School will be valuable for career development, learning about job opportunities, marketing your practice and other ventures, and personal enrichment. By remaining active alumni, you will retain your connection with the Law School, and have an opportunity to give back to future graduates. We look forward to hearing about your career achievements and to meeting you at future alumni events. The University of Minnesota Alumni Association (UMAA) is pleased to offer you one of the first benefits of your degree: a complimentary one year membership in the UMAA. This membership will connect you with the wider University and provide growth and enrichment activities. Later this year, you will receive a membership card in the mail along with a new graduate welcome package. For more information about events and services available to alumni, please contact the Law School's Office of Alumni Relations at 612-625-6584 or visit the alumni page on the Law School's website (www.law.umn.edu). Congratulations again on your achievement and welcome to the legal profession. I know that your education will serve you well as you move forward through your career. Very truly yours, Judith L. Oakes (class of 1969) President, Law Alumni Association f ! f I TIM PAWLENTY GovERNOR oF MINNESOTA Tim Pawlenty, a 1986 graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School, was born in St. Paul and grew up in South St. Paul. He received his B.A. in political science from the University of Minnesota in 1983. In 1990, while practicing law in the private sector, he was elected to the Eagan City Council. In 1992, Pawlenty was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives where he served as House Majority Leader from 1998 through 2002. Pawlenty was elected governor in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. During his two terms as governor, he has worked to balance the state budget while keeping Minnesota competitive, implemented an overhaul of the state's K-12 education standards, instituted health care reforms that led to a zero percent premium increase in the state insurance program, led efforts to increase government efficiency and positioned Minnesota as a leader in efforts to increase the use of renewable energy. Governor Pawlenty currently serves as chair of the National Governors Association. He is a former chair of the Midwestern Governors Association and the Governors Ethanol Coalition. He is a member of the National Infrastructure Advisory Council and the Board of Directors of Achieve, Inc. and the James B. Hunt Jr. Institute. This summer he will become chair of the Education Commission of the States, a nationwide nonprofit organization that works to improve public education by facilitating the exchange of information and experiences among policymakers and education leaders. Pawlenty, his wife, Mary Anderson Pawlenty, and their two daughters live in Eagan. Also a member of the University of Minnesota Law School's class of 1986, First Lady Pawlenty was a district court judge from 1994 to 2007. She currently mediates civil disputes and is active in a number of initiatives, including leading the First Lady's Military Family Care Initiative to support family members of those serving overseas. To continue a tradition we enjoyed our first year here, the Class of 2008 has established a fund for an annual Minnesota Twins Opening Day Celebration. This annual rite of spring, featuring baseball snacks and beverages, will provide a break from daily stresses, remind future law students that winter does end, and allow everyone to discuss whether last year's "wait 'till next year" mantra turned out to be prophetic. Play ball! To foster a supportive Law School community, the Class of 2008 has commissioned an artistic tribute to fellow class member and friend, Chris Oster, who died in January 2007. Chris is remembered as a person of remarkable intelligence and wry humor who was always willing to share his gifts with others. The Class of 2008 hopes that the piece, to be displayed prominently in the subplaza, will inspire students to encourage and assist each other during the ups and downs of legal education, as Chris supported those around him.
