FY2009 ANNUAL REPORT FY2009 2 JULY 1, 2008 - JUNE 30, 2009 2009 YEAR IN REVIEW * I Over the past year, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum has continued to fulfill its diverse mission to serve as a community resource with public display gardens, horticultural research, plant conservation, education and outreach for adults and families. Some of the milestones and achievements the Arboretum reached in fiscal year 2009: I. Sustainability The Arboretum is a leader in sustainability and horticultural best practices. The Green at Heart initiative illustrates our commitment and solutions to advance our overall mission. In June, the Arboretum stopped selling bottled water in its restaurant, vending machines and gift store. Instead, visitors are offered options of free water in a small compostable cup or purchasing re-usable bottles. The water theme took center stage at the Arboretum this summer. From the Waterosity summer exhibition to a newly installed picnic shelter green roof to rain barrels and rain gardens, conservation and sustainability were the buzzwords of the summer. And that’s not all, Waterosity also included information about more efficient irrigation and watering systems, composting and research on low maintenance lawn grasses. The Arboretum participated in an expanded composting pilot program in a partnership with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Carver County and RW Farms and Waste Management. The pilot program received a 2009 Governors Awards for Excellence in Waste and Pollution Prevention for its innovative approach to collecting and composting organics at a composting site on Arboretum grounds. To combat invasive pests on trees, the Arboretum appointed two First Responders for the Emerald Ash Borer. Fortunately, no EAB has been sited here as staff remain vigilant in watching our ash trees and keeping them healthy. Tennant Company donated large floor cleaning machines that use minimal water and no detergent to clean the floors of the Oswald Visitor Center and the Snyder Building. II. Horticultural Research New Northern Accents" Roses Sven, Ole, and Lena developed from the University of Minnesota Woody Landscape Plant Breeding and Genetics Project are now available to the public. These low maintenance, zone 4 hardy polyantha cultivars are resistant to black spot disease. To maintain our native ecosystems, the Arboretum removed all female cork trees, Phellodendron spp. from the grounds because they were self-seeding into natural wooded areas. Gardening staff rank female cork trees, buckthorn and honeysuckle as the most invasive. Two new turf grass demonstration plots were established by University of Minnesota turf grass researchers to continually evaluate the suitability of native grasses with low inputs. New northern-hardy fruit introduction from the Horticultural Research Center, *SweeTango® Minneiska apples, were released commercially by Pepin Heights Orchard, in a special partnership with the University of Minnesota. With much fanfare, this offspring of famous parents: Zestar, and Honeycrisp, found a loyal following in the Twin Cities and selected U.S. markets. III. Development and Capital Projects InJanuary2009,theArboretumpurchased a 90-acre parcel of land that completes the University of Minnesota ownership of the Arboretum watershed. With the Western Addition, the Arboretum’s total acreage reached 1,137—with plans to expand hiking and snowshoe trails along with interpretation for visitors. In spring, more than 20,000 tulips offered a spectacular spring welcome to visitors. Blooms were captured on a new webcam, which was streamed online to the Arboretum website. For summer, 25,000 annuals were showcased in subtle wave patterns in gardens to integrate the Waterosity exhibition theme. This summer, a new garden was planted near the Gate House entrance, featuring Korean Pine, sugar maples, daffodils, azaleas and more. In late fall, the Green Heron Pond Bog Boardwalk closed temporarily after nearly 40 years of use because of physical deterioration and safety concerns. At the 2009 Gala in the Gardens live auction, pledges of $58,000 from donors started a fund to build a new bog boardwalk in the coming years. IV. Exhibits, Education and Outreach The Totally Orchids winter exhibit wowed visitors with orchids both beautiful and unusual thanks to an Arboretum partnership with Orchids Limited in Plymouth. Kathy Allen was named librarian of the Anderson Horticultural Library in November. In addition to being a popular resource for seed catalogs, plant information and rare books, the Library launched a new weekly Children’s Story Time series, kindling new interest in the children’s book collection with the pre-school set, parents and grandparents alike. The Weekend Family Fun programming at the Marion Andrus Learning Center encouraged families to connect with plants through crafts and hands on projects including digging out invasive ANNUAL REPORT FY2009 3 JULY 1, 2008 - JUNE 30, 2009 plants such as buckthorn. Award-winning ‘Learn’ classes served pre-school to high school students, including Pea Pod sessions (preschooler and adult), children’s weekly gardening programs, school field trips, Summer Day Camps and the Plantmobile. Through these programs, the Arboretum reached more than 50,000 children. A new residency program at Dowling Urban Environmental School and Como Park Elementary School and continuing Urban Gardening partnership with Kaleidoscope expanded offi-site education. Adult classes and symposia drew nearly 4,000 participants. In both children and adult programs, the Arboretum focused on sustainability and locally produced foods. The Arboretum offered public policy programs spotlighting environmental conservation and youth development. “Children in Nature: Healthy Development by Design” was the third annual conference concerning the importance of natural-based play environments. Later in the fall, additional symposia included a Land Conservation & Clean Water Summit in September, drawing record attendance of local and national experts, policymakers and community organizations. A Youth Voices Conference, organized by young adults, highlighed youth development and leadership through gardening programs. A partnership with Minnesota State Master Gardeners and University of Minnesota Extension in the Waterosity Go Green with a Splash Weekend in July offered visitors how-to information, expertise and demonstrations of best practices for gardening and water applications. Featured were water-wise demonstrations by exhibit partners and performances by Heart of the Beast Puppet & Mask Theatre. V. Arboretum Earned Revenue and Donor Support An historic first, the Arboretum hosted more than 100 weddings this year, as facility rental business exceeded sales projections. In a special partnership with the Galleria in Edina, the Arboretum Holiday Store opened for the holiday season in 2008, introducing the Arboretum to many. Sales grossed approximately $108,000 in less than two months, and the Arboretum garnered nearly 100 new or renewing memberships at the site. Annual Fund donations were comparable to previous year donations despite slightly fewer donor gifts this year. Corporate sponsorships and donations increased over the year prior and many new companies joined in because of their interest in the environment and education. Major fundraising events surpassed revenue goals to reach more than $149,000—another record! Gala in the Gardens recorded net revenue of $126,356 in addition to $58,000 dedicated to the Bog Walk. Toast & Taste in the Gardens produced a net revenue of nearly $18,000, with the Drive Green! Car Raffle netting $5,000. Membership revenue was up significantly (7%) over FY 2008, reaching $905,000 in sales revenue and a record 21,140 members. A new sales counter in the Oswald Visitor Center produced excellent return on investment. Visitorship exceeded the previous year by nearly 7% totaling 321,993. University of Minnesota GROWING SUSTAINABILITY To improve the environment and reduce energy consumption, the Arboretum discontinued sales of plastic bottled water in the restaurant and vending machines as of June 1, 2009. Visitors are offered a free compostable cup in the restaurant or reusable plastic water bottles are available for purchase. Visitors can bring refillable water containers from home. Rain barrels, rain gardens and a new green roof at the Margot Picnic Area demonstrate ways to re-use rainwater or help it filter into the earth, lessening harmful runoff into street drains and eventually rivers, streams and lakes. The green roof is planted with 13 species of sedums and native goat prairie plants. New turf grass demonstration plots were established to evaluate native grasses as more water-efficient lawn grasses for the future. DID YOU KNOW? The Andersen Horticultural Library collection includes 53,000 seed and nursery catalogues. GROWING GARDENS AND COLLECTIONS In fall 2009, work began on restoring the wetlands adjacent to the Iris Pond. The wetlands were invaded with reed canary grass and hybrid cattails. Funded by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, it will be restored to a beautiful and diverse wetland with native species. In spring 2010, interpretive signage will explain the multi-year restoration process. The 2010 Iris Pond Shoreline Buffer and Demonstration Garden will demonstrate ways to improve water quality by protecting lakes, streams, and wetlands; slow and filter run­ off from sediment, fertilizers and pesticides. It will stabilize the shoreline by preventing erosion from surface run-off, wave action; and moving ice and provide habitat for birds, butterflies, turtles, and other wildlife. The Arboretum’s pine collection expanded to include eight Korean pines in a planting bed in front of the Snyder Building The Green Heron Pond Bog Boardwalk closed in September for public safety reasons after nearly 40 years of use. At the 2009 Gala, a fund was created to begin re-building the boardwalk. DID YOU KNOW? The Arboretum features 22 formal gardens, six herb gardens, multiple perennial gardens, three rose gardens, hosta glade, annual garden and prairie garden. GROWING EXHIBITIONS ‘Intense Beauty: Plants Up Close’ Starts Jan. 8 A juried show by the Arboretum Photographers Society captures the stages of life—from seed and reproduction to decay and return to the soil. Framed prints, cards and posters will be for sale. Great Hall of Orchids Starts Feb. 12 Features the private collection of exquisite orchids grown locally by Orchids Limited of Plymouth. Preview event on Feb. 11 hosted by the Arboretum Auxiliary, orchid classes, weekend tours and info on how to grow your own orchids (45 + species are native to Minnesota). Spring Trunk Show II: The Art of Tree Transformations Starts March 19 A new collection of large-scale wood turnings by award-winning artist Virgil Leih. He transforms tree trunks rescued from landfill wood chippers and power company burners into art. See Walnut, Ash, Elm, Hackberry, Rock Hard Maple, Silver Maple and Cottonwood transformed to sculptures in various sizes and shapes. Meet the artist sessions, weekend tours and more. Spring Big Build with Patrick Dougherty Acclaimed environmental artist Patrick Dougherty, in residence May 2 - 22, creates a large-scale environmental sculpture using locally grown materials. Summer Powerhouse Plants Starts June 5 - Oct. 10 Not your garden variety superheroes, the summer exhibition explores the energizing links between plants and people for everyday living. Featured are the incredible edibles of Minnesota-grown super nutrient-rich vegetables, fruits, herbs and grains; and the growing storehouse of bio-energy from plants for food, fuel and transportation. Reedy Gallery The 2009 fall exhibit “Seasons / Autumn Unplugged” was the first resulting from a new collaboration with the Wilcock Gallery of Excelsior. Winterscapes winter exhibit, an orchid ‘quick-draw’ event and spring flowers exhibit showcase a broad community of artists. A portion of sale proceeds benefit the Arboretum. J Hi- GROWING LEARNING AND OUTREACH Arboretum public policy symposia recently featured Children in Nature: Healthy Development by De­ sign — focusing on natural play environs and nature-based learning. A Land Conversation & Clean Water Summit in September drew national and local environmental officials and policymakers. Adult classes and symposia attract nearly 4,000 participants each year. With a theme of connecting people to nature, adult classes include cooking with locally grown foods with local chefs, nature photography, gardening school, arts and more. For families and children, summer daycamps, guided adventures, field trips, Plantmobile classes and on-site summer classes offer learning opportunities. Weekend Family Fun programming encourages families to connect with plants through hands on projects. Every year, more than 55,000 children participate in Arboretum education programs. GROWING HORTICULTURAL RESEARCH The University of Minnesota Horticultural Research Center is internationally renowned for cold- hardy plant and fruit research, with 155 plant introductions. Northern plant introductions include azaleas, roses, ornamental grass and more. Of those, 27 are apple introductions such as Honeycrisp, Regent, Fireside, Haralson, Zestar!® and SnowSweet®; and the newest introduction, SweeTango® Minnieska (offspring of Honeycrisp and Zestar). We added new research components and held cutting edge public policy programs that brought people together from our region and across the United States. This was a challenging year for philanthropy and balancing the budget; however, earned income continued to increase and annual giving was similar to 2008. Gala in the Gardens: Azalea Lights, the June garden party was well attended and raised the highest gala income ever, with special support for the renovation of the Green Heron Pond bog boardwalk. Toast and Taste featured 21 restaurants, four local breweries and seven regional wineries for a special evening of culinary delights. The major news of the year, however was the University’s final purchase of 90 acres to the west of the Arboretum, the former Tschimperle property, now known as the Western Addition. The Arboretum now covers 1,137 acres and includes almost our entire watershed. We are thrilled to own this important piece of property and look forward to unlocking the educational potential it holds for the future. Your work and support of the Arboretum is greatly appreciated.
