Methanol-d4 (CD3OD) and dimethyl sulfoxide-d6 (DMSO-d6) were purchased from Cambridge Isotope Laboratories. Acetic acid-d4 (AA-d4) was purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. Other solvents were purchased from Fisher and Sigma-Aldrich and used as received unless otherwise mentioned. --- Characterization methods --- Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was conducted on Bruker Avance IIII HD 400 (400 MHz) at 300 K in deuterated solvents unless otherwise noted. Quantitative 13C-NMR experiments were conducted on a Bruker Avance IIII AV-500 (500 MHz) with 2048 scans and a 29.3 s relaxation delay, corresponding to a T1 relaxation time of 11 s. Quantitation was verified by showing no difference in the relative integrals between spectra acquired with 29.3 and 24 s. Chemical shift values (´), reported as ppm, were calibrated using solvent or TMS signals. Data analysis was done on Bruker TopSpin or MestReNova software. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). FTIR spectra of dry PA films (Figure S21, Table S9) were obtained using a Bruker Alpha III Compact FT-IR Spectrometer. Samples were cut from melt-pressed films and stored in a desiccator over Drierite prior to measurement. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) was carried out in HFIP (cont. 0.025 M CF3COOK) using a EcoSEC system HLC-8240GPC series LC equipped with RI and UV detectors, two Tosoh TSKgel SuperAWM-H analytical columns (6.0 mm I.D. x 15 cm, 9 ¼m), and a TSKgel Super-AWM-H guard column (4.6 mm I.D. x 3.5 cm, 13 ¼m). Analyte solutions were filtered through a PTFE membrane (0.2 ¼m pore size) prior to injection. Analysis was conducted using a 0.35 mL/min flow rate at 40 °C. Experimental number-average molar masses (Mn,SEC) and dispersities () were determined using EcoSEC Elite-WS Analysis software with PolyAnalytic poly(methyl methacrylate) calibration (0.6940 kg/mol). Hydrolytic stability of PMCLm and PCLm films was assessed in 1 M HCl (aq) and 1 M NaOH (aq). Specimens (Ø = 4 mm, 0.3 mm thickness) were added to vials containing the aqueous solutions (1 mg/mL). At each timepoint, the solution was decanted off and the remaining film was gently rinsed with DI water and dissolved in HFIP for SEC analysis. Cryo-milling. Precipitated and oven-dried polymers were ground cryogenically using a Retsch Cryo-mill with liquid N2 cooling (2 x 2 min at 30 Hz with intermediate cooling). SEC analysis in HFIP showed little to no changes in the molar mass distributions after milling (Figure S8). Humidity conditioning. Saturated salt solutions were prepared into desiccators with a perforated platform to hold the samples. The relative humidity (RH) and temperature inside the desiccators were monitored with an AcuRite hygrometer (range 16-98% RH; accuracy ±4% at 10-20%, ±3% at 20-80%, ±4% at 80-90%, and ±5% at 90-100%) or a Fisherbrand TraceableGO hygrometer (range 0-95% RH; accuracy ±3% at 5-75%, otherwise ±5%). Typical sample sizes were 3-6 mg. Thermal stability experiments (i.e., Td,5% determination) were performed immediately after vacuum drying cryo-milled polymers at 90 °C for e2 d. Conditioned films were analyzed immediately after taking them out of a controlled humidity environment. The amount of sorbed water was calculated from the mass loss at T = 200 °C (Figure S-ii). An average of three runs is reported. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was performed using a TA Instruments Discovery DSC. Film specimens ranging in mass from 3-6 mg were hermetically sealed in aluminum Tzero pans in open air. Scans were conducted under a nitrogen atmosphere with a temperature ramp rate of 10 °C/min unless indicated otherwise. Rheological characterization was performed on a TA Instruments RSA-G2 Solids Analyzer for dry PA films in a tensile geometry and a TA Instruments ARES-G2 rheometer for molten samples in a shear geometry. For solid sample testing, melt processed films were cut into 5.0 mm x 30.0 mm x 0.31 mm specimens and stored in a desiccator over Drierite. Samples were loaded under 10 g axial force and equilibrated at each temperature for e5 min. The linear viscoelastic (LVE) regime was determined from a strain sweep at 25 °C using a 65 Hz frequency (Figure S3). Frequency sweeps were performed from 150 to 0.01 Hz between 25205 °C using a strain selected from the LVE region (0.010.03%). For shear rheometry, disk specimens with a thickness of ~0.3 mm and diameter of 8 mm were punched out from dried films. An 8 mm parallel plate geometry was used. The LVE regime was determined from a strain sweep from 0.1 to 1.0% strain at 70 °C (the lowest temperature sampled) using a frequency of 100 rad/s. Frequency sweeps were performed from 0.1 to 100 rad/s at each temperature with a strain amplitude of 0.5% selected from the LVE regime. Loss tangent (tan(´)) traces from both experiment types were superposed along the frequency axis by applying horizontal shift factors, aT, invoking time-temperature superposition (TTS). TTS was evaluated by the quality of the trace overlap and by the fit of the shift factors to the Williams-Landel-Ferry equation: loga(a_T )= (C_1 (T- T_ref))/(C_2+(T-T_ref)) where C_1 and C_2 are empirically derived constants, and T is the measurement temperature.2 The WLF fit agreed well with the horizontal shift factors obtained. Master curves were generated for the tensile experiments using reference temperatures (Tref) of 55 or 60 °C (Figure S11). A master curve was created for the small-angle oscillatory rheology performed on molten PMCLm. The entanglement molar mass (M_e) of PMCLm was calculated from the master curve as M_e=(ÁRT_ref)/(G_N^0 )=(1.11 g cm^(-3)×8.314 m^3 Pa K^(-1) mol^(-1)×373 K)/(1.34 MPa)=2.6 kg mol^(-1) where Á is the density of PMCLm, R is the universal gas constant, T_ref = 100 °C = 373 K, and G_N^0 is the plateau modulus, defined as the storage modulus at the minimum of tan(´).3 3D printing was carried out with a RegenHU R-GEN 200 bioprinter through a 0.5 mm nozzle with 500 kPa dispensing pressure at 170 °C. A multilayer mesh structure (1 mm x 1 mm x 0.6 mm) was printed using a 2 mm/min printhead speed and a 0.2 mm layer height. Melt-pressing. Cryo-milled and vacuum dried polymers were processed into films using a Wabash Genesis hydraulic press. The press was pre-heated to the processing temperature (2a-d: 150 °C; 2e: 200 °C; 2f: 250 °C) and polymer was placed inside a 0.25 mm thick steel mold sandwiched between PTFE release films and metal plates. The material was placed under <500 lbs pressure for 1 min, after which the pressure was gradually increased to 4,000 lbs over 3.5 min. After 30 s at 4,000 lbs, the material was cooled down in a Wabash hydraulic press under a 4,000 lbs pressure and water circulation. Density measurement. The density of PMCLm was determined using a Mettler Toledo Density determination kit. Samples were cut from melt pressed films and weighed in air and in distilled water. The density was calculated from these measurements using the Archimedes principle as Á_PMCLm=W_air/(W_air-W_water ) (Á_water-Á_air )+Á_air where ÁPMCLm is the sample density, Wair¬ is the sample mass in air, Wwater is the sample mass in water, Áwater is the density of water taken to be 0.99775 g/cm3, and Áair is the density of air taken to be 0.0012 g/cm3. The results are shown in Table S14. Tensile tests were performed on a Shimadzu Autograph AGS-X equipped with a 1 kN standard pneumatic flat grip set with single-side file-teeth grip faces. Samples (~ 0.3 mm x 1.4 mm x 15 mm) were gripped with 0.6 MPa pressure and sandpaper (3M P320) to prevent slipping and tearing. Data were collected with TRAPEZIUM X software under ambient conditions in uniaxial extension mode at a 5 mm/min strain rate. Adhesive property testing. Samples were prepared by placing a 100 ¼m thick melt processed film (1 in x 1 in for static shear; 0.5 in x 1 in for lap shear) onto a pre-heated substrate inside an oven (150 °C). A second substrate and a 200 g weight were placed on top, and the materials were held at 150 °C for 3 min before cooling to RT. Static shear tests were performed by hanging a 1 kg weight from each sample and recording the time of adhesive failure, up to a maximum of 7 d. Lap shear tests were carried out according to ASTM D-1002-10 on an MTS Criterion Universal Test System equipped with a 100 kN load cell. A strain rate of 0.05 in/min and a data acquisition rate of 5.0 Hz were used. X-ray scattering images of static PA films were collected at RT with lab-source and synchrotron-source instruments. Freshly quenched films were analyzed within 13 h of processing using a SAXSLAB Ganesha X-ray instrument (Xenocs) with a photon wavelength of » = 1.54 Å (Cu K± source) at the University of Minnesota Characterization Facility. Images were collected on a DECTRIS Eiger 1M area detector with sample-to-detector distances of 1.05 m (SAXS) and 0.1 m (WAXS). The 2D detector images were azimuthally integrated to produce 1D patterns of intensity I(q) versus q, with scattering wavevector magnitude |q| = q = 4À »-1 sin(¸/2). Silver behenate was used as a calibrant for q values. Synchrotron X-ray scattering data were acquired from the 11-BM Complex Materials Scattering end station at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II; Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY) using a photon wavelength of » = 0.7293 Å (17 keV beam energy) and DECTRIS Pilatus area detectors (2M for SAXS, 800K for WAXS). Static images of dry films aged for 10 d were collected from samples mounted upright on Kapton tape at RT using 3 s exposures. In-situ tensile X-ray scattering data were collected for quenched films (~0.3 mm thickness) conditioned under a controlled humidity for 30 d. The specimens were mounted onto a Linkam MFS tensile stage with 60-grit sandpaper and elongated at a rate of 5 mm/min. Two-second exposures were taken every 2 s during elongation (4 s shutter period). All images and patterns were corrected by subtracting the intensities from the appropriate blank patterns. Reduction of 2D images and integration of azimuthally bounded regions (i.e., separate meridional and equatorial patterns) were performed using the Nika software package.4,5 Meridional and equatorial slices with an azimuthal width of 15 degrees were taken at 0 and 90 degrees with respect to the draw direction, respectively. X-ray crystallography. 5-Methylazepan-2-one was recrystallized from hexanes prior to analysis. Data collection and structure solution were conducted at the X-Ray Crystallographic Laboratory, K193 Kolthoff Hall, Department of Chemistry, University of Minnesota. All calculations were performed using Pentium computers using the current SHELXTL suite of programs. Data collection. A crystal (approximate dimensions 0.22 mm x 0.11 mm x 0.05 mm) was cut from a larger piece of material and placed onto the tip of a 0.2 mm MiTeGen loop and mounted on a Bruker Photon-IIII CMOS diffractometer for a data collection at 130(2) K.6 A preliminary set of cell constants was calculated from reflections harvested from two sets of frames. These initial sets of frames were oriented such that orthogonal wedges of reciprocal space were surveyed. This produced initial orientation matrices determined from 116 reflections. The data collection was carried out using MoKalpha radiation (graphite monochromator) with a frame time of 15 seconds and a detector distance of 5.0 cm. A strategy program was used to assure complete coverage of all unique data to a resolution of 0.75 Å. All major sections of frames were collected with 1.2° steps in w or f at different detector positions in 2theta. The intensity data were corrected for absorption and decay (SADABS).7 Final cell constants were calculated from the xyz centroids of 5732 strong reflections from the actual data collection after
