Abstract
The use of data and analytics has increased in the National Football League over the last decade, with teams expanding their front offices to meet the increasing demand. From scouting players and opponents, to optimizing player performance and game strategy, data scientists are contributing to the results seen on Sundays in new and exciting ways. Today's talk will provide an introduction to life working inside the front office of the San Francisco 49ers and a career in sports analytics more broadly. I will review how a front office in the NFL is structured and how a Research & Development department operates. The types of data we utilize will be discussed as well as day-to-day responsibilities, before concluding with case studies which highlight competitive advantages gained from leveraging analytical approaches. Lastly, I will discuss my path from UMD to the 49ers and potential avenues for those interested in pursuing a career in sports analytics.
