Abstract

This paper analyzes the relationship between Neon Genesis Evangelion and Christianity. Previous research has focused on Christian themes and symbolism in the Evangelion franchise, but has largely ignored the structural similarities. Using the categories of small scale and large scale repetition, I argue that the use of repetition in the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise is deeply connected to the narrative structure of the Bible. Analysis points to the conclusion that repetition is utilized not only to provide meaning in small segments of the works, but that the literary device of repetition is a backbone for these works as a whole. Further research is highly suggested, and this paper is meant to serve as an impetus for change in the direction of Evangelion research focusing on the franchise's relationship to Christianity.
