Committing a Movement to Memory: Media, Civil Rights, and American Collective Memory

Abstract

This dissertation compares African American and dominant press commemorations of the civil rights movement in order to assess how newspapers and websites characterize and define civil rights in the years beyond the movement's traditionally accepted end. This study embraces a mixed-method approach to research in media history, critical race theory, and collective memory studies.
