Abstract

In my 4,100-word review essay "Perry Miller's Three Essay Collections, and Walter J. Ong's Thought," I highlight certain points from Perry Miller's three essay collections (1956, 1967, and 1979), with special attention to points that, in my estimate, may have implications for our understanding of Melville's works. Because Perry Miller served as the director of Walter Ong's massively researched Harvard doctoral dissertation about the French Renaissance logician and educational reformer and Protestant martyr Peter Ramus (1515-1572), I use Ong's mature thought from the early 1950s onward as a larger conceptual framework for discussing the selected highlights from Perry Miller's three essay collections.
