Learning Ecologies: Building, Improving, and Refining Pedagogy: Minnesota Writing and English Conference 2023
(Minnesota Writing & English, 2023-03-31) Jewell, Richard; Hinrichs, Danielle; Sklaney, Larry; Beard, David; Minnesiota Writing & English (MnWE) Committee
The 14th annual Minnesota Writing & English Conference unfolds on the beautiful, tree-lined campus of one of our largest and oldest universities in Minnesota, St. Cloud State. Events will happen in the modern, well-ventilated Atwood Student Center and nearby classrooms. All events will be simultaneously in person and on Zoom. You may present and attend in either mode. The spring 2023 Conference prompts our larger MnWE community to think about sustainability: what makes natural systems or human endeavors (even modest ones like our annual gathering) vital, resilient, and evolving? This year’s theme encourages participants to reflect on how we create and nurture the environments and fields that sustain students and help them thrive. Which systems and events work well? Which are lively? Which are not? Myriad challenges such as climate change, equity for all, Coronavirus, and the struggle over American democracy require that we examine our relationships with each other and with our planet. English and Writing instructors, ESOL and Reading teachers, students, librarians, and tutors to consider how we can equip ourselves and others to understand and contribute to these critical conversations. What pedagogies have worked to cultivate better thinkers, readers, and writers, and what are your visions for tomorrow’s learning ecologies? Welcome to MnWE 2023!

Changing the Narrative: Empowering Stories (Minnesota Writing and English Conference) 2022
(Minnesota Writing & English, 2022-04-07) Jewell, Richard; Hinrichs, Danielle; Sklaney, Larry; Beard (UMN Liaison), David; Minnesota & Writing (MnWE) Committee
Minnesota Writing & English (www.MnWE.org) is partnering with the Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC) for our 2022 conference, so this year’s theme, “Changing the Narrative: Empowering Stories,” spotlights the Humanities. Whether we teach Composition, Literature, or Creative Writing–or we serve students in tutoring centers or libraries–stories frame student and teacher identities, infuse the texts we explore, and inspire our students' and our own writing. Recent events–from the pandemic and its economic dislocations, social injustices and responses to them, to disruptions of our sense of America in both domestic and foreign arenas–we are compelled to reassess our controlling cultural narratives and forge new stories to shape paths forward. How are you and your students and/or colleagues transforming personal, professional, or communal narratives? Last year’s online-only conference was a great success. We’d like to repeat that and also enjoy the opportunities of meeting in a physical space. As a result, we are organizing a conference that is both online and in-person. In addition, we plan on using, once again, the discussion-intensive roundtable breakouts and plenaries that worked so well last year. Welcome to MnWE 2022!

Minnesota Writing and English Conference: New Visions for College Writing (Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13, 2024) Program
(Minnesota Writing & English, 2024-04-12) Jewell, Richard; Sklaney, Lawrence; Hinrichs, Danielle; Beard (UMN Liaison), David; Minnesota Writing & English Committee
The 15th annual Minnesota Writing & English Conference asks the MnWE community–Minnesota and surrounding states–to think about the future of academic writing instruction: • What lessons should we be teaching students in a world of post-pandemic skills deficits and AI-powered, large-language models? • What are the most effective pedagogical strategies for the tasks our students will face? Technological and systemic changes have put the future of our field in question. Corporations push to replace writers and other white-collar workers with AI-based tools. Schools eliminate multiple-choice placement tests but struggle to find satisfactory alternative processes. Political pressure builds to eliminate developmental coursework despite growing need for developmental reading and writing courses. Responding to these and other challenges, English and writing instructors, ESOL and Reading teachers, students, librarians, and tutors must adapt what has worked well while fostering the best of the latest developments. Which innovative visions should shape the future of college writing instruction?

Deficit, Exploitation, Beauty, Opportunity: Academics and Practitioners Talk Rural Health and the Rhetoric of Health and Medicine (Galley/Preprint)
(Rhetoric of Health and Medicine, 2025-05-31) Lundgren, Kari; Beard, David; Bloom, Zomi; Burke, Connor; Brock Carlson, Erin; Gouge, Catherine; Jordan, Joshua; Rogers, Brandon; Sirek, Abby; Winfield, Asha S.
This dialogue examines rural health and healthcare by putting rhetoricians who study rural communities in direct conversation with healthcare professionals who practice in and advocate for rural communities. Thematic analysis of the dialogue revealed that conversations about healthcare in rural communities can simultaneously address what rural communities lack, how rural communities are exploited, and how strong and resilient rural communities are, while also emphasizing what opportunities there are for scholars and practitioners to part- ner together for the benefit of rural communities. The dialogue demonstrates how working directly with key stakeholders like medical providers can be both practically and intellectually fruitful when addressing complex issues like rural health and RHM.
