University YW, or UYW, was one iteration of a student group with a long history at the University of Minnesota. In 1891, the group was formed by twelve sophomore women as a University faction of the Young Women’s Christian’s Association (YWCA). For nearly a century, they worked on YWCA projects and causes.
In 1979, the group became a program unit of the Minneapolis YWCA and by 1985, nearly a century into their existence, the name of the group changed to the University Young Women’s (UYW). In 1986, the group officially separated from the Minneapolis YWCA and separated from the national YWCA in 2001 due to the discrimination and exclusion of transgender people. In 2002, the UYW changed their name to the Women’s Student Activist Collective and retained that name until it changed. Presently, this group exists as the Feminist Student Activist Collective.
Other records of this student group are available through the University Archives. For more information, see the archive's Collection Guide.
