Item American Indian Gathering and Recreation Uses of National Forests(2004) McAvoy, Leo; Shirilla, Paul; Flood, JosephThis paper identifies and describes the patterns of use of the Chippewa National Forest (Minnesota) by Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe members; and, the use patterns of six national forests in northwest Montana by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. The paper also identifies conflicts tribal members encounter while using the forests and makes recommendations regarding the management of national forests in light of tribal members' use of these lands. The implications from both study areas indicate that Forest Service managers should pay more attention to cooperative approaches, and potential co-management of forest resources that are near American Indian reservations. Managers need to be more sensitive to American Indians' uses and values associated with national forests and other protected lands that are close to reservations. They also need to be aware of the history of government and tribal relations, as well as tribal member traditional and historic uses of forests.Item Analysis of Factors Affecting Dust Explosion(2014) Aurnob, Kazi; Lodge, KeithIn the US alone, the Chemical Safety Board reported 281 dust explosions that occurred between 1980 and 2005; resulting in 199 fatalities and 718 injuries. The basic factors required for a dust explosion are: a combustible dust, suspension of dust in high concentration, atmospheric oxygen, and an ignition source. Typically it is very difficult to eliminate factors in a factory setting handling dust particles. This study focuses on the electrostatic charge produced when dust particles are transported pneumatically in a pipe. This electrostatic charge can lead to ignition source and hence cause a catastrophe. Humidity is found to be in direct correlation with electrostatic charge. At a higher humidity, conductivity increases and the charge is more likely to dissipate. Besides looking at related works of other researchers (who looked at electrostatic charges and the influence of humidity on them), experiments were also carried out to analyze the influence of charge on different powders when suspended in different environment and the charge decay time at low humidity as well as at high humidity. It was confirmed that humidity mitigates the situation by decreasing the charge decay time (unless the powder is hydrophobic).Item Analyzing Transpiration in Replacement Trees Following Emerald Ash Borer Infestation(2018) Bouchard, Peter J;The invasive emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) poses an immediate threat to black ash (Fraxinus nigra) wetland forests across the U.S. Black ash is an important mediator of hydrological dynamics in such systems – they serve to lower the water table and prevent transition to cattail-dominated wetlands. Given their unique ecohydrological niche, black ash mortality via emerald ash borer stands to disrupt the hydrologic processes of these wetlands. This study aims to provide transpiration data on tree species that may potentially replace black ash to mitigate changes in the hydrology of these sites. This study employs Granier (1985) style thermal dissipation probes to measure sap flux density as it relates to transpiration. Transpiration was measured on black ash and several co-occurring tree species during the growing season. We found that black ash had sap flux rates similar to several other trees but, depending on the method used to calculate sap flux from raw data, the black ash transpiration may actually be much higher. The results from this study demonstrate the potential impact on hydrology from the loss of black ash but also the need for more intensive comparisons between black ash and potential replacement trees.Item Attempting to Feed America: Examining the Many Stakeholders Involved within the Food Banking System(2015) Pelzer, Katie C.; Souza, Rebecca deItem Book Review of "A History of Russian Literary Theory and Criticism: The Soviet Age and Beyond"(Charles Schlacks, 2012) Vaingurt, JuliaItem Book Review of "A Martian Stranded on Earth: Alexander Bogdanov, Blood Transfusions, and Proletarian Science"(Charles Schlacks, 2013) Rowley, David G.Item Book Review of "Agrarian Reform in Russia: The Road from Serfdom"(Charles Schlacks, 2011) Moore, Colleen M.Item Book Review of "Ballets Russes: The Art of Costume"(Charles Schlacks, 2011) Bowlt, John E.Item Book Review of "Becoming Soviet Jews: The Bolshevik Experiment in Minsk"(Charles Schlacks, 2013) Shtakser, InnaItem Book Review of "Blacks, Reds, and Russians: Sojourners in Search of the So-viet Promise"(Charles Schlacks, 2009) Roman, MeredithItem Book Review of "Bolshevik Sexual Forensics: Diagnosing Disorder in the Clinic and Courtroom, 1917-1939"(Charles Schlacks, 2010) Ament, SuzanneItem Book Review of "Conspirator: Lenin in Exile"(Charles Schlacks, 2012) Pogorelskin, AlexisItem Book Review of "Cultivating the Masses: Modern State Practices and So-viet Socialism, 1914–1939"(Charles Schlacks, 2012) Black, T.
