The Grand Vizier had been instrumental in the genocide committed against the Armenian peoples, a genocide Tehlirian had witnessed (and survived) firsthand. What followed was a two-day trial in which Tehlirian was acquitted. Students in this lesson participate in a mock trial of Tehlirian. Students are assigned different roles: witnesses, attorneys, court personnel, and jury members. The guide first defines and details key components of the service learning process. Subsequent lesson plans describe how to help groups of high-school-aged youth develop teamwork and a service mission, logistical plans, and actions to accomplish their service mission. Do we rely on the justice system to prosecute those most responsible for the Cambodian genocide? Should all people who committed these crimes in Cambodia be tried?
