The Minnesota Youth Development Research Group was initiated at the University of Minnesota in 2007, and is housed in the Department of Educational Psychology. The purpose of the group is to explore methodological and substantive challenges in youth development, relying on the tenets of positive psychology, ecological perspectives of youth development, and the translation of research to practice. The group primarily works with the triennial Minnesota Student Survey (Minnesota Department of Education) and similar youth data sets.

The measures contained in PYD and being bullied are tested for measurement invariance. The data from the study were obtained from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey with a sample size of 161,224. Multiple group confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test for invariance between groups. Linear and logistic regressions were used to describe the connection between feeling safe, bullying, and PYD measures. Results indicate that there is a positive association between sports participation and PYD during out of school time. We observed a decrease in the amount of bullying yet an increase for LGB students who participated in sports. LGB students had an association with lower levels of skills and supports and can partially be explained by feeling less safe and higher levels of being bullied. There is evidence for configural invariance, with weak and strong invariance being rejected.Item Do LGB Students Feel Safe and Why Does it Matter?(2018-04) Lamm, Rik; Do, Tai; Vue, Kory; Nickodem, Kyle; Rodriguez, Michael C.Item Effects of Participation in School Sports on Academic and Social Outcome Variables(2015-04) Bulut, Okan; Van Boekel, Martin; Stanke, Luke; Palma, Jose R.; Nickodem, Kyle; Vue, Kory; Chang, Yu-Feng; Latterell, Nicholas; Rodriguez, Michael C.Item Effects of Positive Assets and Socio-Economic Status on Academic Performance(2012-04) Palma, Jose; Rodriguez, Michael C.; Cabrera, Julio C.; Albano, Anthony D.; Vue, Kory Y.Item Empirical Evidence to Support the Measurement of Sense of Belonging in Graduate Students(2023-04) Do, Tai; Chavez, Carlos; Lamm, Rik; Rodriguez, Michael C.Item Empirical Standard Setting for SEL Measures via the Proposed Interpretive Argument(2020) Rodriguez, Michael C; Dosedel, MichaelItem Examining After School Activities: Do Breadth and Intensity Matter?(2014-04) Palma, Jose R.; Van Boekel, Martin; Stanke, Luke; Vue, Kory; Cabrera, Julio C.; Chang, Yu-Feng; Latterell, Nicholas; Karl, Stacy R.; Rodriguez, Michael C.; Bulut, OkanItem Examining Item Parameter Drift as a Source of Construct Shift(2013-04) Bulut, Okan; Stanke, Luke; Rodriguez, Michael C.; Palma, Jose R.; Vue, Kory; Cabrera, Julio C.Item Examining Noneffortful Responding in Survey Responses and SEL Measures(2024) Lamm, Rik; Abulela, Mohammed A.A; Nickodem, Kyle; Rodriguez, Michael CItem Examining the Importance of Students’ Sense of Belonging in School(2014-04) Karl, Stacy R.; Cabrera, Julio C.; Rodriguez, Michael C.Item Expanding the vision of Reimagine Minnesota: A collective education roadmap for action(Minneapolis Foundation, 2019-12) Alexander, Nicola; Dworkin, Jodi; Gibbons, Kim; Grier-Reed, Tabitha; Marshall, Stefanie; Maruyama, Geoff; Mason, Annie; Pekel, Katie; Rodriguez, Michael; Scharber, Cassandra; Sweitzer, Julie; Varma, KeishaWe know Minnesota is among the worst in the nation for racial disparities in K-12 education.
