The Edible Garden Project helps to diversify the appearance of the UMD campus while also providing opportunities for collaboration across colleges and departments. In its third year, the project now boasts 19 different groups involved with 16 campus gardens. These gardens serve many purposes including encouraging healthy eating, providing opportunities for UMD students, faculty and staff to learn about local produce, and providing fresh vegetables to the UMD community. Part of this course includes the process of conducting research and presenting findings to constituents. Possible outcomes of this project-based course is the implementation of the group's recommendations for achieving the UMD campus sustainability goals. The group consists of five students: four graduate students and one undergraduate student, all studying environmental education or biology. The group's project will pertain to sustainable roof options for achieving sustainability goals. It appears that rooftops on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus are underutilized to contribute to sustainability. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate to what extent and ways UMD rooftop spaces can be used for sustainability. To this end, the group has developed a set of guiding research questions: 1. What is the current condition of UMD campus roofs? 2. What plans, if any, are already in place for UMD rooftop spaces? 3. By researching both the structural, or administrative, aspects of waste management and the campus community participation, we were able to grasp an idea of how effective our waste management is at UMD. By conducting interviews with Mindy Granley, UMD Sustainability Coordinator; Doug Greenwood, Principle Ground and Buildings Supervisor; and A.J. Matthews, Environmental Program Coordinator, we were able to gain a better understanding of the functional aspects of waste management. We also talked to a variety of students and staff to gauge an idea of how waste management on campus suits its population. We then took both the background research and applied anthropology that we did and created a documentary film that can serve as an educational tool.Item Hair Dryers, Gaming Systems, and Fans: Engaging an Online Social Psychology Class in an Energy Competition for Residence Halls(2015-10-26) LaCaille, Lara; Granley, MindyItem How Much and How Much Better? A Case Study of Zero-Net Energy Housing in Northern Minnesota(2022) Carlson, Sam; Wagner, Rachel; Korpi, Jonna; Caswell, Deja; Karmaker, Leah; Snow, MadelineGreenhouse gas emissions, the most prevalent being CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide are collecting in the atmosphere and impacting all organisms that reside on this planet. We have the resources, knowledge, and technology to reduce these emissions, thereby slowing, stopping, and even reversing the negative impacts if we move quickly and make the big investments needed to make a difference. Each sector can make significant contributions to reducing emissions and this paper models the energy, financial, and CO2 savings of a net-zero residential home design in a very cold climate (northern Minnesota, USA) compared with the same design built to current Minnesota Residential Energy Code minimums.
