    Oral history interview with Keith W. Uncapher

    The interview begins with a review of projects at RAND when Uncapher was hired in 1950. He discusses some of the projects he was involved in or had managerial responsibility for through the early 1970s, such as JOHNNIAC, JOSS, a survivable national network, GRAIL (GRAphical Interactive Language), and some work related to the ARPANET. The formation of Information Sciences Institute (ISI), funded by DARPA, is described, as well as some of the work ISI did for DARPA/IPTO. The interview ends with Uncapher's general observations on how DARPA and IPTO have changed over his years as a contractor. This interview was recorded as part of a research project on the influence of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on the development of computer science in the United States.

    Oral history interview with Robert Braden

    This interview with internet pioneer Robert (“Bob”) Braden briefly covers his education in physics before concentrating on his long and distinguished career in computer science. He served at the computation centers of Carnegie Institute of Technology and Stanford University before joining UCLA as Manager of Programming (1968-1974) and later serving (1975-1986) as Project Director for Software Research. In 1986 he became a Supervising Computer Scientists and Project Leader at the Computer Networks Division of USC’s Information Sciences Institute, where he continues to serve. From its inception (in 1981) he was a member of Internet Activities Board (IAB) and served as IAB Executive Director for a half decade. He was long-term member and Chair of the End-to-End Task/Force Research Group (1984-2005). In these roles he made fundamental contributions to internet protocol standards. Braden is an ISI Fellow and an ACM Fellow.

    Oral history interview with Terry Benzel

    Computer security pioneer Terry Benzel discusses her education and programming work at Charles Draper Laboratory, before focusing on her work at MITRE Corporation, Trusted Information Systems (TIS), Network Associates and USC Information Sciences Institute (ISI). The MITRE discussion highlights her early role and perspectives on criteria evaluation (including her role in the SCOMP evaluation) in the formative years of TCSEC and after the publication of the criteria in 1983. Starting as a TIS principal scientist she rose to become a vice president in charge of the West Coast (Los Angeles) office, and later led a research team of 120 scientists/engineers for Network Associates. Among the technologies discussed are firewall development, and the security testbed at ISI.
