Item Microwave Studies of Pre-Reactive Molecular Complexes: Fundamental Science and Atmospheric Implications(2022-04) Huff, AnnaInteractions between molecules are the fundamental driving force behind chemical reactivity and the existence of liquids, solids, and solutions. Studying small groups of molecules, i.e., “molecular clusters,” allows detailed analysis of the individual interactions between molecules and connects the properties at the molecular level to those in the bulk phase. Small molecules and clusters have been characterized by microwave spectroscopy with theoretical calculations playing a supporting role. This approach was to yield information about the nature of bonding and intermolecular interactions that uniquely contributes to the general understanding of matter. At the same time, simple prototypes were selected that are related to problems of broader interest in the area of atmospheric chemistry.
