    In my 4,350-word review essay "The Norton Critical Edition of Herman Melville's Pierre, and Walter J. Ong's Thought," I discuss Melville's sensationalistic 1852 novel Pierre; or, The Ambiguities. The 2017 Norton Critical Edition of it is skillfully edited by Robert S. Levine and Cindy Weinstein to make it accessible to student readers -- and to other readers as well. My highlights from the thought of the American Jesuit cultural historian Walter J. Ong (1912-2003; Ph.D. in English, Harvard University, 1955) are intended to help readers deepen their understanding of Melville's experimental 1852 novel.
