Item An Analysis of Canadian Rail Movements to the United States Using the 1992 Public Use Waybill Sample(1994-03) Fruin, Jerry; Halbach, DanThe United States and Canada share a common border and have long been each other's major trading partners. Railroads serving the two countries have historically had a common gauge and similar equipment, so cross-border shipments have been common for some types of freight and commodities. The recent passage of NAFTA will further integrate the economies of the United States and Canada along with that of Mexico. (Mexico also has a common gauge and a potential for a vast increase in rail traffic movements to and from both countries to its north.) This paper demonstrates a method to analyze rail traffic from Canada to the United States using the 1992 ICC Public Use Waybill Sample. This procedure will be useful to track changes in trade flows by rail between the two countries and in analyzing critical rail infrastructure needs critical for increased trade on both sides of the border (and eventually to and from Mexico).Item Benefits and Barriers to Electrification of the Freight System in Minnesota - White Paper(Center for Transportation Studies, University of Minnesota, 2022-05) Khani, Alireza; Davazdah Emami, BehnamThis white paper provides a brief overview of benefits and barriers to the electrification of freight vehicles in Minnesota.Item Best Types of Commodity Flow Data for Freight, Railroad, and Ports and Waterways Studies(Minnesota Department of Transportation, 2023-02) Fonseca, Camila; Zeerak, Raihana; Napoline, Kimberly; Zhao, JerryThe understanding of freight movement is critical to economic development and competitiveness and to make decisions regarding the transportation system. Despite the increased interest in freight planning and modeling, freight data are limited in availability and granularity, and the existing sources are incomplete or outdated. This research analyzes various types of public and proprietary freight databases to determine which are most helpful for planning, programming, and designing future infrastructure on the truck, rail, air, and waterway networks within Minnesota and surrounding states. There are some comprehensive multimodal freight databases that provide different levels of data granularity. These are typically complemented with other data sources that are specific to a transportation mode. We also interview stakeholders involved in freight planning in Minnesota to identify data gaps and capture current and future data needs. Important needs include (i) mode specific freight data, especially for waterways and ports and air freight; (ii) equity considerations in freight transportation; and (iii) understanding the relationship between freight transportation and climate change. Additional freight data are much needed overall to inform economic development and funding prioritization, as well as to evaluate and minimize supply chain disruptions.Item Components of an Attractive Minnesota Freight Market - White Paper(Center for Transportation Studies, University of Minnesota, 2017-06) Schmit, Matt; Minnesota Freight Advisory CommitteeThis white paper represents an effort to identify key aspects of an attractive freight market in Minnesota. Findings are based on approximately 30 individual consultant-led conversations with key stakeholders in Minnesota’s freight industry, including producers that grow, manufacture, and ship product; carriers in trucking, rail, air, and water-based transportation modes; third-party logistics firms that track and contract shipping routes to the nearest nanosecond; and regulators and planners at various levels of government.Item Freight and Logistics E-News April 2004 (Vol. 2, No. 1)(Center for Transportation Studies, University of Minnesota, 2004-04) Center for Transportation StudiesArticles include: CTS Freight and Logistics Symposium proceedings published;
