Topics that are common to many of the interviews include Trevor Robinson’s key role in organizing Control Data Australia; the early computer sales in Australia to the Bureau of Census and Statistics, Department of Defence, Postmaster General, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Bureau of Meteorology, and several prominent Australian universities. Control Data Australia did business data processing for such large concerns as Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP), Telstra, and others. A distinctive emphasis was its work in developing computer systems for race-track betting for the state of Victoria’s Totalisator Agency Board (TAB) as well as for other Australian states and New Zealand. Other topics include relations with Control Data’s headquarters in Minneapolis, business data processing, data centers, database management, networking and Cybernet, and projects done in several Far East countries. This pioneering research, which was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Justice, provided Parker with the substance for a number of influential books. Parker also discusses the emergence of the computer security industry, IBM’s contributions to the field, and computer security legislation. He explains his effort as head of the Computation Center to centralize all university computing activities, and the failure of that effort in the l970s with the introduction of minicomputers on campus. Feigenbaum also details the department's financing, including government support (ARPA, National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research), equipment donations from industry (IBM especially), and faculty salaries. Control Data was the lead contractor for the ALS of the Air Force Logistics Command, and Laccabue was the project manager for seven years—from the pre-bid stage until late in the project. The interview details CDC’s pre-bid work, bidding for the project, the problematic design specifications in the Air Force RFP, the challenges of the project, project redefinition and renegotiation, and the decision to discontinue ALS. It also touches briefly on Laccabue’s work with CDC’s STAR program, and, after leaving CDC, his work with Fairchild Semiconductor and Tandem/Hewlett-Packard.
