    Fiscal Year 1984 Program Report
(Water Resources Research Center, University of Minnesota, 1985-09) Water Resources Research Center
The Program Report of the University of Minnesota Water Resources Research Center presents a summary of activities for fiscal year 1984, covering the period of October 1, 1984 through September 30, 1985. The Report describes the research activities of the Center, its involvement in training water scientists and its efforts information in transfer and the findings of six sponsored projects. These findings include: 1. Unsaturated flow patterns are shown to have higher rates of removal of pentachlorophenol than saturated flows which limit oxygen. 2. Atrazine and nitrates have been detected in water samples examined from two Karst springs in southeasternMinnesota. 3. Coliform bacteria are shown to enter groundwater in we1ls in Olmsted County, Minnesota, following rainfall events that exceed 1/4 inch. 4. Drought tolerance in crop plants showed: that lower water potentials of young expanding leaves are the result of solute accumulation, which contributes to the high turgor pressure necessary for growth; that the leaf elongation rate and stomatal conductivity relationship is species characteristic; that accumulation in stem cells of drought adapted plants was greater than non-adapted plants, and that a drought adaptation includes reducing the vascular bundles and vessels. 5. Laboratory experiments on the effects of acid precipitation on Minnesota lakes and in situ porewater sampling have identified sulfate reduction and calcium- cation exchange is major mechanisms of internal alkalinity generation. 6. Efforts to improve liaison between the Water Resources Research Center and State and Federal agencies has resulted in the involvement of eight university researchers from four departments in a cooperative research project with Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and state Planning Agency, the United States Geological survey, and the Natural Resources Research Institute, University of Minnesota, Duluth.

    Fiscal Year 1987 Program Report
(Water Resources Research Center, University of Minnesota, 1988-10) Water Resources Research Center
This report summarizes activities of the University of Minnesota Water Resources Research Center for fiscal year 1987, covering the period July 1, 1987 through June 30, 1988. The report describes results of research projects sponsored by the center, its information transfer and coordination activities, and its involvement in training water resources scientists and engineers. During this period, the Center funded eight projects through its federal grant program. A wide range of issues and problems were addressed by the eight projects. Four were concerned with water quality aspects of Minnesota lakes, one each with lake-groundwater hydrology, wetlands, water quality, and treatment technology. Two lake projects developed new and improved methods to assess nutritional and trophic status of lakes, and a third project was concerned with assessing trophic state changes in prairie lakes of central Minnesota since agricultural activity began in the region during the mid 19th century. Another project examined historical trends of mercury contamination in lakes of northeastern Minnesota in relation to efforts to define the sources of contamination. Four of the FY 1987 projects were in their second (and final) year, and completion reports are in preparation for publication in late 1988. Completion reports for two projects that ended in FY 86 were published during the past year. The Center organized and co-sponsored a major, statewide conference on water resources problems and issues in Minnesota called Minnesota Water: 1988, which was held in St. Paul in February 1988 and attracted over 350 participants. In addition, the Center co-sponsored a half-day workshop on nitrate contamination of groundwater that attracted over 125 participants.

Proceedings of Conference on Inland Lake Renewal and Shoreland Management
(Water Resources Research Center, University of Minnesota, 1972-06) Water Resources Research Center
The program of the Conference included an introduction and overview of the program of the Inland Lake Demonstration and Shoreland Management Project of Wisconsin. Reports were presented on selected lake renewal activities, selected shoreland management and development activities, and shoreland management educational programs. Projects were described involving chemical inactivation of nutrients, nutrient exclusion/dilutional pumping, rehabilitation of a small flowage, urban runoff, characterization private controls for recreational land development, shoreland development, and lake rehabilitation legislation and programs. The progress of Minnesota's shoreland program and activities in lake demonstration projects was described. Alum was used successfully for chemical inactivation of nutrients in an overfertilized small lake in Wisconsin. Dilutional pumping resulted in some success in reducing the phosphorus content of another lake. Plastic sheeting, in combination with sand and gravel blankets on the bed of a millpond, was used to control aquatic plants. With regard to water-oriented recreational developments, it was suggested that an automatic property owners association can provide a mechanism for maintaining and managing the common open space and facilities to which individual lake lot owners have common rights. A nationwide survey disclosed that explicit statutes saying that a local unit of government or State agency is authorized to project, manage, or rehabilitate lakes are rare. The 1969 session of the Minnesota Legislature passed the Shoreland Management Act requiring each county to adopt a shoreland management ordinance to help combat lake problems. Considerable progress has been made in implementing the provisions of the Act.
