As the result of a housing marketing study, the City of Minnetonka discovered the need to develop a more diverse range of housing options for residents, with housing of various types, sizes, price points, and densities. Minnetonka project lead Loren Gordon worked with students in PA 5212: Managing Urban Growth and Change, to conduct an audit of current housing-related policies in Minnetonka, and offer recommendations and example policies to increase density and encourage Smart Growth principles. The students' final report and presentation are available.Item Envision North St. Paul: Engaging Unterrepresented Participants in Response to the Request by the City of North Saint Paul(Resilient Communities Project (RCP), University of Minnesota, 2013) Johnson, Wesley; Abdi, Suadi; Damiano, Tony; Kowen, DavidThis project was completed as part of the 2013-2014 Resilient Communities Project (rcp.umn.edu) partnership with the City of North St. Paul. The City of North St. Paul sought to build on existing neighborhood crime watch organizations to engage and empower neighborhood residents to keep their neighborhoods safe, livable, and vibrant, while developing a clearer sense of resident issues and priorities. Project lead Paul Ammerman collaborated with students in PA 5253: Planning Participation Processes, to create a participation plan targeted at engaging underrepresented populations. The students provided the City with an engagement plan and specific recommendations for communication, meeting techniques, and stakeholders to engage. This is one of two reports completed on this topic for this course. The City of North St. Paul adopted a Redevelopment Master Plan to help guide development in the City, with a focus on downtown redevelopment. The City was interested in determining which businesses would thrive in the downtown. Project lead Paul Ammerman worked with students in PA 5511: Community Economic Development, to conduct a market analysis. The students made recommendations for several types of businesses and development niches that the City should seek in the downtown, including antiques, classic automobiles, museums and cultural resources, microbreweries, and woodworking. They also identified several additional strategies for downtown revitalization, including activating underutilized spaces, expanding wind and solar power, and investing in bicycle infrastructure.
