The date of each paper is noted in the spreadsheet under Publication Year. 5. Geographic location of data collection: Work on the dataset was completed at the University of Minnesota. The papers themselves (which comprise the data) were written at the University of Minnesota Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories at 47.2260° N, 95.1950° W. University of Minnesota Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories 28131 University Circle Lake Itasca, MN 56470 6. Information about funding sources that supported the collection of the data: The data collection was funded by the generous support of Darby and Geri Nelson. 7. Overview of the data (abstract): This dataset is a compilation of data that was collected via an analysis of student research papers associated with field classes at the University of Minnesota Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories. These papers, which cover a time frame from 1928-2012, were examined in order to locate raw data. There are 2855 papers covered. Various characteristics were recorded including the amount of data, whether the data was numeric or descriptive, the year the work was conducted, the location of the study, the species covered, and whether maps or photographs were also present. The resulting data set presented here cites the original papers and includes information on how to obtain a copy. -------------------------- SHARING/ACCESS INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Licenses/restrictions placed on the data: This complete dataset in spreadsheet format has the CC BY 4.0 license (Attribution 4.0 International) Individual reports that were used to compile this dataset may have restricted access. These papers are available online on-site via computer terminals at Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus, online to University of Minnesota affiliates via VPN, via interlibrary loan, or via contacting Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories staff. 2. Links to publications that cite or use the data: A link to each individual publication is included in the spreadsheet in the column AD - URL. As noted above, Individual reports used to compile this dataset may have restricted access. Researcher papers may require journal subscriptions or access via a library. 3. Was data derived from another source? No 4. File List A. Filename: Itasca_student_paper_data_inventory.csv Short description: This is an inventory of data contained in written reports of research conducted by students at the University of Minnesota Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories, 1928-2012, with links to the related reports. Over 2800 papers were reviewed. -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: Over 2800 student papers, 1929-2010, describing research conducted at the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories were examined to identify those that included raw data. For those that had raw data, various fields were recorded. See Variable list below. 2. Methods for processing the data: Written reports of student research conducted at the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories from 1928 to 2012 were examined. There are 2855 papers total and they are associated with field classes conducted at the Station. An inventory was developed by the authors based partly on existing metadata schema for biological data. Papers were mainly accessed in paper although some were checked in electronic format. 3. People involved with sample collection, processing, analysis and/or submission: The compiled dataset described here was developed by Librarians Shannon Farrell and Julie Kelly. Students Chris Crosby, Anna Flucke, Darcey Gans, Calista Hughes, Megan Korne, and Kylie Littel assisted with data collection and compilation. Original research was completed by the student authors listed in the associated papers and documents. Authorship of each report is noted in the individual documents (under Author(s) in the spreadsheet). ----------------------------------------- DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: Itasca_student_data_paper_inventory.csv ----------------------------------------- 1. Number of variables: 30 2. Number of cases/rows: 2855 3. Missing data codes: Blank fields indicates missing data. 4. Variable List * Column A - Author(s). Listed last name first. * Column B - Title of the paper. * Column C - Publication year. Year that the paper was written. * Column D - Paper number. These were assigned by the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories staff, in chronological order. Not all papers received a number. These student papers were submitted to the library located at the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories in conjunction with Itasca-based field classes. * Column E - Location. Location where the research was conducted, if noted in the paper. Locations are almost all within Itasca State Park or very nearby. Many are lakes or creeks or landmarks within the park. * Column F - Scientific name. Scientific name of species, if mentioned in the paper. This is only noted if there were 5 or fewer species. * Column G - Common name. Common name of species, if mentioned in the paper. This is only noted if there were 5 or fewer species. * Column H - Type of study. Descriptions were only applied to a few types of specialized studies: bird studies, winter ecology (conducted by students from St. Olaf College), and those carried out by College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University students. * Column I - Does this paper include raw data? (Y/N). * Column J - Describe data topic. A short phrase or sentence is included that gives an overview of the project. * Column K - Handwritten or typed or a mix? * Column L - Numeric raw data (Y/N)? Is some or all of the data numeric in nature? * Column M - Numeric data - if yes, how many pages? * Column N - For numeric data what are the column headings or row names? (Y/N). * Column O - Descriptive data (Y/N)? Is some or all of the data descriptive in nature? This would include a written description of what the researcher saw, rather than numbers. A list of species or relative abundance (many, few, etc) would also fall here. * Column P - Descriptive data - if yes, how many pages? * Column Q - Maps? Are any maps included in the paper, either printed or hand-drawn? * Column R - Number of maps. * Column S - Briefly describe any maps. Descriptions are indeed brief. * Column T - Photos/diagrams (Y/N)? * Column U - If yes, how many photos? * Column V - Briefly describe any photos. Often just a word or short phrase. * Column W - Graphs (Y/N)? * Column X - If yes, how many graphs? * Column Y - Briefly describe any graphs. Many descriptions appear to be taken from the titles of the graphs. * Column Z - Summary tables (Y/N)? These would be tables that do not contain raw data but present summaries calculated from the raw data. * Column AA - If yes, how many summary tables? * Column AB - Briefly describe any summary tables. Descriptions probably reflect the titles of the tables. * Column AC - Is there description of the methods anywhere? (Y/N). Does the paper contain a thorough enough methods section to allow the project to be repeated? * Column AD - URL. These papers are available online on-site via computer terminals at Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories and on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus, online to University of Minnesota affiliates via VPN, via interlibrary loan, or via contacting Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories staff.
