Retrieved from the Data Repository for the University of Minnesota, http://hdl.handle.net/11299/214088 --------------------- DATA & FILE OVERVIEW --------------------- 1. File List A. Filename: GovtRecords-cleaning1.1.do Short description: Stata .do file used for cleaning data after it was entered by hand from photocopies of the annual plantation brochures. .do file is annotated. B. Filename: plantation-history-hp.csv Short description: Data on plantations planted throughout the state of Himachal Pradesh. C. Filename: plantation-history.dhm.csv Short description: Data on plantations planted only in the circle of Dharmashala (essentially the same as Kangra District) D. Filename: Species wise benefits classification_filled.xlsx Short description: Coding done by Pushpendra Rana, a local forest official and research collaborator, on the benefits of each species for local people. -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: The Himachal Pradesh Forest Department published annual plantation brochures from 1979-2015 (they may have published earlier, but no records remain, 2015 was the most recent available when we collected data early in 2018. 1983 was missing). We accessed these brochures in the forest department library at Shimla, phocopied them, and then Rajesh Rana manually entered these data into a spreadsheet. Forrest Fleischman later wrote a .do file to clean and label the data. The .do file is included. We understand that the head office of the Himachal Pradesh forest department compiles these data from data reported up from local offices. 2. Methods for processing the data: 3. Instrument- or software-specific information needed to interpret the data: 4. Standards and calibration information, if appropriate: 5. Environmental/experimental conditions: 6. Describe any quality-assurance procedures performed on the data: 7. People involved with sample collection, processing, analysis and/or submission: All coauthors were involved ----------------------------------------- DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: plantation-history-hp.csv ----------------------------------------- 1. Number of variables: 66 2. Number of cases/rows: 808 3. Missing data codes: blank cells are likely zeroes, but we do not know why they are missing. Rows 797-809 also contain several blank cells from column B- BD. We have no information about why these do not have data for number of trees planted. 4. Variable List Name: schid Description: A unique code for each government program name: schname Description: The name of a government program responsible for planting trees Name: year Description: year Name: Area Description: Area planted in Hectares Name: notidentified Description: number of trees planted (no species given) Name totaltreesplanted Description: total number of individual trees planted (sum of all other tree species columns) Name: Grasstufts Description: number of grass tufts planted Name: nameofschemes Description: same as schname Name: schemedescription Description: brief text descripton of the name of the scheme Name: condifencelevel Description: Degree of confidence that Pushpendra Rana had in describing and coding the scheme Values: High, medium, low Name: statefunded Description: Variable takes on a value of 1 if the government program was funded by the state government Name: donorfunded Description: variable takes on a value of 1 if the government programs was funded by a foreign donor Name: participatory Description: variable takes a value of 1 if the government program was a formal participatory program (e.g. Joint Forest management) Name: Watershed Description: Variable takes a value of 1 if the program was aimed at watershed protection/improvement Name: Catchment Description: Variable takes a value of 1 if the program was aimed at protecting a catchment area Name: Compensatory Description: Variable takes a value of 1 if the program was aimed at compensating for loss of forest elsewhere (e.g. CAMPA) Name: labor_NREGA Description: Variable takes a value of 1 if the program aimed to provide employment (e.g. NREGA) All other variables are the local (Kangra) names of tree species, with the number being the number of individuals of that species planted. For the cells labled [crbchairy crmulbary crmapple] we assume that the labels should be crbcherry, crbmulberry, and crbmaple (the data entry processes that led to these data include multiple rounds of data entry by people who are not great English language users. Most likely typos introduced by the government clerks who created the data tables we copied this from). ----------------------------------------- DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: plantation-history.dhm.csv ----------------------------------------- 1. Number of variables: 66 2. Number of cases/rows: 796 3. Missing data: Blank cells are likely zeroes, but we do not know why they are missing. 4. Variable List: Identical to variable list for plantation-history-hp.csv ----------------------------------------- DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: species wise benefits classification_filled.xlsx ----------------------------------------- 1. Number of variables:11 2. Number of cases/rows: 40 3. Variable List This data file records the uses of each planted tree species, according to Pushpendra Rana, an experienced forest official and researche, in Himachal Pradesh. For each variable name (a purpose for which the tree could be used), a value of 1 was entered if the species could be used for that purpose.
