File List A. Filename: Apple dead variety_accession number.pdf Description: Phenotype records for apple selections and accessions in second test plots. -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: A record was produced for each selection or accession in the apple breeding program that included morphological descriptions of the tree and fruit as well as annual descriptions of its performance. Numbering of selections in the program was sequential starting with MN 1. Evaluation of the selection would continue for several years until it was either introduced as a named cultivar or discarded from further consideration. This file includes data from second test plots in the breeding program. A selected seedling usually designated with a 3 or 4 digit number from the breeding program was grafted on to unspecified rootstock. Usually two to four trees were grafted and observed for several years for traits such as disease susceptibility, winter injury, productivity and fruit size until the trees died or were removed. Some records contain similar data from accessions. These are designated by a N number in the Variety line. The records in this collection are mainly for selections that were discarded from the 1940s through the 1960s. 2. People involved with data collection: As stated above, since the data was collected over large periods of time, it is unclear who authored each page/dataset. Leadership at the Horticultural Research Center/Fruit Breeding Farm has been documented in a few publications, including: Snyder, Leon C. 1983.
