Welcome to public health moment from the University of Minnesota. A new relaxation therapy to improve the healing of chronic foot ulcers in patients with diabetes was successful for 14 of 16 people involved in a recent clinical trial. The therapy was based on research conducted at the University of Wisconsin by Brigita Rice, a public health researcher now at the University of Minnesota. Relaxation allows the blood vessels to widen and dilate and allow more blood to flow to those areas. The increased blood flow will then both carry away some toxins and bring more nutrients to the area and heal ulcers. The relaxation therapy is called warm feet intervention. Rice says patients can do it themselves at home. Not only is this a tool for enhanced pain relief and healing for patients who suffer from diabetes or prefer arterial disease. But it is also a tool for self empowerment and motivation as a supplement to traditional medical care. Patients can now contribute to their own health.
