Filename: Chironomid Composition All Sites 2017-2018 Short description: SFPE were collected from November 2017 through March 2018 on all sites. Data are presented as relative abundance of each taxon for each collection date by site. This data was used to calculate Jaccard’s coefficient of similarity among sites. B. Filename: Air_Water All Sites Short description: Water temperature data was collected from 18 November 2017 to 7 April 2018 for Ike's Creek and 1 November 2017 to 7 April 2018 Pine Needles Creek and Arcola Mills Stream. Mean daily air temperatures were obtained from 1 November 2017 to 7 April 2018 from the NOAA National Weather Service. Our data were collected in order to create air-water linear regressions for the study sites over winter. 2. Relationship between files: N/A 3. Additional related data collected that was not included in the current data package: None 4. Are there multiple versions of the dataset? No -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: For water temperatures - Water temperatures were collected from three sites within Ike's Creek and one site, each, on Pine Needles Creek and Arcola Mills Stream. Water temperatures were recorded hourly using HOBO® temperature loggers. For exuviae collection - Exuviae were collected with a pan from areas with foam and organic debris accumulation. Contents were poured through a 125μm sieve and preserved in 90% ethanol in the field. Sampling followed the protocols established by Ferrington, L. C. Jr., M. A. Blackwood, C. A. Wright, N. H. Crisp, J. L. Kavanaugh, & F.J. Schmidt, 1991. A protocol for using surface-floating pupal exuviae of Chironomidae for rapid bioassessment of changing water quality. In Peters, N. E. & D.E. Walling (eds), Sediment and Stream Water Quality in a Changing Environment: Trends and Explanation International Association of Hydrological Science Press, Wallingford, Oxforshire, UK: 181-190. 2. Methods for processing the data: For air and water temperatures - Air temperatures were averaged over the reported maximum and minimum daily air temperatures for each day of the study to obtain mean daily air temperatures. Water temperatures in °F were averaged over a period of 24 hours to obtain mean daily water temperatures and were converted to °C. For exuviae collection - Samples were sorted in batches in the lab using 12X magnification. If there were less than 100 exuviae in a sample, then all exuviae were slide mounted, but if samples had more than 100 exuviae, then they were subsampled, targeting rare taxa. Slide mounted specimens were identified under a compound microscope to genus and species. Specimens of the genus Diamesa were not identified to species since it is difficult to distinguish between species of Diamesa using pupal exuviae. All other specimens were identified to species or morphospecies. 3. Instrument- or software-specific information needed to interpret the data: Excel or R Studio 4. Standards and calibration information, if appropriate: N/A 5. Environmental/experimental conditions: For water temperatures - HOBO® temperature loggers were placed in streams, submerged under water over the winter. For exuviae collection - SFPE were collected from sites on streams over the winter of 2017-2018. 6. Describe any quality-assurance procedures performed on the data: For water temperatures - Three different people averaged water temperatures over 24 hours for each day of the study and all subsequent datasets were compared to ensure that all calculated means matched. The same temperature loggers that were used in the field were placed in an ice bath and checked to ensure that they were reading the same temperature. Upon testing the loggers, the Lower site logger B from Ike's Creek was found to be reading temperatures with a higher variance compared to the other loggers (0.063 variance). The variance was, thus, subtracted from all of the subsequent water temperature values for Lower site B to correct the higher variance. For exuviae - After the initial sort, one sample was randomly chosen and resorted from each sample batch. If the number of exuviae found on second sort equaled or exceeded more than 10% of the total exuviae found during the initial sort, then samples from the entire batch were resorted. Genus and species level identifications were conducted by two people and the resulting identifications were checked to ensure that they matched. If a specimen had two different genus level identifications, then the specimen was re-examined and a singal identification was determined based on the most current literature. If a specimen did not fit any published taxonomic keys, than a morphospecies name was given to that specimen based on its unique characteristics. The morphospecies name was then used consistently for that morphospecies whenever it was observed in the study. 7.
