Geographic location of data collection (where was data collected?): Island Lake Reservoir (Duluth, MN, USA) and Lake Mille Lacs (Garrison, MN, USA) 6. Information about funding sources that supported the collection of the data: Three funding sources including 1) Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center, 2) St. Louis County, and 3) University of Minnesota Duluth 7. Overview of the data (abstract): This contribution to DRUM contains two Excel data files, one based on samples collected from Island Lake Reservoir (Duluth MN) in 2017 (filename: Island Spiny 2017 Used in LRM paper) and the other collected from Lake Mille Lacs (Garrison MN) in 2018 (filename: Mille Lacs Spiny 2018 Used in LRM paper). Large portions of the analyzed data were first published in the journal article: Branstrator, DK, Dumke, JD, Brady VJ, and Wellard Kelly, HA. 2021. Lines snag spines! A field test of recreational angling gear ensnarement of Bythotrephes. Lake and Reservoir Management 37:391-405. This article should be read for an overview of the locations where samples were collected and the nature of the data. Briefly, the data are measurements of the numbers and characteristics of spiny water flea (Bythotrephes) ensnared on various types of angling gear and the numbers and characteristics of spiny water flea collected by net tows at the locations and times that the angling gear types were deployed. -------------------------- SHARING/ACCESS INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Relationship between files: Parallel data sets for two different lakes -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: For the zooplankton population data (tab ZP tow data), vertical tows of a plankton net were used to collect samples at each of three locations along a one kilometer transect. The collections were preserved in 70% Ethanol. The net had a mesh of 500 microns, a circular mouth opening diameter of 0.5 m, and a mouth area of 0.196 square meters. At each of the three locations, triplicate collections were made (indicated as replicates in the spreadsheet). For the ensnarement data (tab Transect boat data), various types of angling gear were towed across the one kilometer length transects where the zooplanton tows were conducted, and this occurred simultaneously to the zooplankton tows. The numbers of Bythotrephes ensnared on the gear types are reported. The gear types included three fishing lines towed behind the boat on three separate fishing rods - one with monofilament line, one with fluorocarbon line, and one the braided dacron line; a downrigger system with a steel cable and an associated fishing line that was always monofilament line; a bait bucket; and a simulated livewell. Some gear types were not deployed on some of the transects. 2. Methods for processing the data: Zooplankton were scored in the laboraory under dissecting microscopes. 3. Instrument- or software-specific information needed to interpret the data: None 4. Standards and calibration information, if appropriate: The zooplanton nets were assumed to sample with 100% efficiency. 5. Environmental/experimental conditions: Sampling was done only in reasonably calm weather conditions. 6. Describe any quality-assurance procedures performed on the data: Bench counts and data entry were doubled checked occassionally for quality. 7. People involved with sample collection, processing, analysis and/or submission: Numerous people are acknowledged in the publication referenced above. ----------------------------------------- DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: WORKING Island Spiny 2017 Used in LRM paper.xlsx & WORKING Mille Lacs Spiny 2018 Used in LRM paper.xlsx ----------------------------------------- Field name: Boat Values and definitions: MZP = Boat/Crew that collected Zooplankton Tow samples ; Transect = Boat/Crew that collected recreational fishing gear samples Field name: Transect Values and definitions: Location in the northwestern region of Mille Lacs .
