Welcome to Public Health moment from the University of Minnesota. Leafy, green vegetables are good for you, your mom told you that. But they're also ranked number one in a top ten list of riskiest foods as regulated by the FDA. Other risky foods include eggs, tuna, fish, tomatoes, sprouts and berries. The top ten list doesn't include meat which is regulated by the US Department of Agriculture. Craig Hedberg, a professor and food safety expert at the University of Minnesota, explains what this means. One of the top riskiest foods is leafy green vegetables. And this is top on the list because it accounted for the most outbreaks in a large number of illnesses. But it's also top on the list, partly because people eat so much leafy, green food. Hedberg recommends reducing your risk of developing a food borne illness by keeping a clean and orderly kitchen. Kitchen hygiene is very important. We want to make sure that when we're working with raw meats and poultry, we don't cross contaminate and make bigger problems of handling fresh produce. Washing hands wells, cleaning and sanitizing work surfaces is very important to making sure that food is as safe as it can be. With another public health moment, I'm John Finnegan.
