Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: Leaf samples were collected in the field, stored in paper bags and oven-dried at 65 °C for 48 h. 2. Methods for processing the data: Carbon fractions, including non-structural carbohydrates, hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin/minerals (%), were determined from oven-dried and ground samples using sequential digestion (ANKOM 200 Fiber Analyzer). For details see: https://www.ankom.com/technical-support/fiber-analyzer-a200 – "Analytical Procedures" 3. Instrument- or software-specific: ANKOM 200 Fiber Analyzer, ANKOM Technology, Macedon, N.Y., USA 4. Standards and calibration information, if appropriate: 5. Environmental/experimental conditions: Dry field conditions 6. Describe any quality-assurance procedures performed on the data: two blanks (empty filter bags) per cycle; duplicates run for 10% of samples 7. People involved with sample collection, processing, analysis and/or submission: Anna K. Schweiger (collection, processing, analysis, submission) Cathleen Lapadat (processing) Shan Kothari (collection, processing) Jeannine Cavender Bares (submission) Brett Fredericksen (collection) Ian Carrier (collection) Lewis French (collection) Erin Murdock (collection) Craig See (collection) Travis Cobb (collection) --------------------- DATA & FILE OVERVIEW --------------------- This data set contains results from carbon fraction analysis (Fiber Analyzer 200, ANKOM Technology), including non-structural carbohydrates, hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber contents in percent (%) from tree and grassland species sampled at the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve in East Bethel, MN. The data was collected as part of the Dimensions of Biodiversity project “Linking remotely sensed optical diversity to genetic, phylogenetic and functional diversity to predict ecosystem processes”. Samples were collected in or near the old fields chronosequence, the oak savanna, and the Forest and Biodiversity Experiment (FAB 1) plots. We used this data together with leaf-level spectral measurements to build partial least squares regression (PLSR) models for predicting leaf traits from spectra. 1. File List A.
