Plants no longer existing in 1986 on the contemporary map are often noted as discarded or crossed out on the map. Species included: Malus/apple; Prunus/cherry; Pyrus/pear 2. Relationship between files: The various files contain different maps of the Horticultural Research Center and from different periods of time or different areas of the Research Center. -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: The Horticultural Research Center is divided into blocks of land that usually each have a separate crop or research history. Individual maps in each file will usually refer to the block number. Within the block, maps often refer to row number and then tree or plant or plot number within the row. The spacings of rows and plants within rows are provided on some maps as well as compass orientation of row. Planting date is often provided. Maps are produced at planting and modified as changes are made such as new plants included or old plants removed. Maps of blocks containing selections from the breeding programs will usually indicate those selections as MN xxxx where xxxx is the selection number. Maps containing seedlings from crosses will usually indicate the designation for a cross consisting of the first and last letter of the common name of the crop followed by a number that includes the last two digits of the year and then the sequential number of the cross within that year, e.g. AE 5501 would be the first cross (01) made in 1955 (55) in the crop apple (AE). Grape is GE, strawberry is SY, raspberry is RY etc. 2. People involved with data collection: As stated above, since the data was collected over large periods of time, it is unclear who authored each page/dataset. Leadership at the Horticultural Research Center/Fruit Breeding Farm has been documented in a few publications, including: Snyder, Leon C. 1983.
