Date of data collection (single date, range, approximate date): 2020-12-01 to 2022-04-01 5. Geographic location of data collection (where was data collected?): Room 375, Civil Engineering Building (Rock Mechanics Lab) 6. Information about funding sources that supported the collection of the data: National Science Foundation 7. Overview of the data (abstract): This dataset contains cutting force signals, videos of rock cutting processes, particle size distribution from sieving analysis obtained from scratch tests conducted on Dunnville sandstone at different depths of cut, which cover the rock failure in ductile, fragmentation and brittle regimes. The force signals and videos can be used to study the rock failure mechanism and energy scaling in the rock cutting process. The particle size distribution data explains the energy dissipation in rock cutting process and the scaling law of the specific energy in the fragmentation regime. -------------------------- SHARING/ACCESS INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Relationship between files: Most of the scratch test process are recorded. The force singal and the videos are named with the depth of cut followed by the test sequence. The files from the second round of test are named beginning with 'DS3-'. Example: DS3-D010-G2S.dat is the force signals from the second round scratch test (denoted by DS3) at a depth of cut 0.1 mm (denoted by D010) for the second time (denoted by G2S). Correspondingly, the DS3-0.1mm-2.MOV is the video that records this scratch test process. Note that not all the scratch tests are recorded, and some of the videos are recorded in a slow motion for a detailed view of the rock failure process. The videos were recorded with iPhone, and to watch it, you can 1. download the video and transfer it to iPhone or iPad; 2. use VLC media player (open source); 3. put it on google drive and use default google palyer. -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- 1.
