Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: Leaf samples were collected in the field, stored in paper bags and oven-dried at 65 °C for 48 h. 2. Methods for processing the data: Carbon and nitrogen contents (%) of oven-dried and ground samples were analyzed with combustion–reduction elemental analysis (TruSpec CN Analyzer, LECO) 3. Instrument- or software-specific: TruSpec CN Analyzer, LECO, St. Joseph, MI, USA 4. Standards and calibration information, if appropriate: 5. Environmental/experimental conditions: Dry field conditions 6. Describe any quality-assurance procedures performed on the data: Duplicates analyzed for 10% of samples 7. People involved with sample collection, processing, analysis and/or submission: Anna K. Schweiger (collection, processing, analysis, submission) Cathleen Lapadat (processing) Jeannine Cavender-Bares (submission) Brett Fredericksen (collection) Ian Carrier (collection) Lewis French (collection) Erin Murdock (collection) Craig See (collection) Travis Cobb (collection) Shan Kothari (collection) --------------------- DATA & FILE OVERVIEW --------------------- This data set contains carbon and nitrogen content from combustion–reduction elemental analysis (TruSpec CN Analyzer, LECO) from tree and grassland species sampled at the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve in East Bethel, MN. Data were collected as part of the Dimensions of Biodiversity project “Linking remotely sensed optical diversity to genetic, phylogenetic and functional diversity to predict ecosystem processes”. Samples were collected in or near the old fields chronosequence, the oak savanna, and the Forest and Biodiversity Experiment (FAB 1) plots. We used this data together with leaf-level spectral measurements to build partial least squares regression (PLSR) models for predicting leaf traits from spectra. 1. File List A.
