Overview of the data (abstract): The goal of our study was understand how roadside pollinator communities respond to planting pollinator-friendly seed mixes in roadsides in Minnesota, USA. We used a field study of mixed-age roadside plantings to assess this response by comparing bumble bee and butterfly communities in roadsides planted with status quo non-native seed mixes to those planted with pollinator friendly, native seed mixes. We show that while pollinator diversity is positively related to floral diversity in roadside plantings, the pollinator diversity in roadsides planted with pollinator-friendly native seed mixes was not different from those planted with status quo non-native seed mixes. Relationship between files: Plant cover, floral diversity, and pollinator occurrence data were collected at plots (n = 57; plot types: planted with native pollinator friendly seedmix, planted with status quo non-native seedmix, typical ditch of a roadside of unknown planting type) via various methods. These plots were located within sites of varying ages (n = 19; 2-20 years since planting; note that typical ditches were of unknown age). These plots were visited repeatedly over the course of May-August 2021 and on each data plant and pollinator data were collected. As such, the plant and pollinator data can be connected via the fields denoting date, plot, and site. Photos provided are voucher photos for bumblebee IDs and are described in the associated text (Darst et al.). The photos can be connected to the pollinator occurences via the filename for each photo being referenced in the field "Reference ID:". Multiple photos of the same bee are denoted by integers in parentheses at the end of each photo's filename. Filenames were generated as "date site&plot initialIDspecies" in the format: (m-d #[site]type[ofplot] initialIDspecies (#[of sequence for this bee]).jpg). Within the photo voucher folder, the images are arranged by their initial ID'd species. Within each of those initial ID folders, a set of new folder exists where each photo has been sorted into the species ID made by our projects bumble bee expert. R code is provided to use the included datasets to reporduce the results of the associated manuscript. -------------------------- METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION -------------------------- 1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: Nineteen roadside revegetation sites each containing three plots (native seeded, non-native seeded, and typical) were surveyed for floral resources and butterflies and bumble bees. Each plot was surveyed six times between 28 May 2021 and 24 August 2021. Floral resources and grasses were surveyed using 1x1 m quadrats placed every 5 m along zigzagging transects at a ~35° angle. Only currently flowering plant were identified. Fifteen minute bumble bee and butterfly surveys occurred concurrently with plant surveys between 0830 and 1600 and consisted of a modified Pollard walk. One surveyor surveyed bumble bees and another surveyed butterflies. Surveyors noted if pollinators were actively foraging. The first of each species of bumble bee encountered on a survey was photographed for expert verification and released. 2. Methods for processing the data: R code included contains some minimal processing of data for these analyses. An associated data repository containing the raw survey data and processing into plant data presented here is pending. 3.
