Abstract: Golub discusses his career in computer science at Stanford University. In 1962, after working as a numerical analyst for the Space Technology Center, Golub was hired by George Forsythe for Stanford's new computer science program. Golub describes interactions and tensions between the mathematics department and new computer science faculty. He mentions the resistance Forsythe encountered in his attempts to increase revenues by selling computer time to private industry. Golub describes Forsythe's personality and his performance as an administrator.
